You should take your family to Corpus Christi and Galveston. Or the stock yard in Ft Worth.

I've heard nothing but bad things about Fort Polk. Everyone I served with that had the misfortune of being there gave me the impression that it was nothing but a godforsaken swamp that needed to be drained or abandoned.

The best thing about Ft. Polk is that New Orleans is five hours away, and a little less for LSU in Baton Rouge. I've been there three times, but good training at JRTC.

Is Ft Sill that bad? My husband and I are being stationed there in July.

I only experienced Fort Sill as an AIT soldier, so I can't speak as to what it's like to be with a regular unit there, but Lawton itself was unimpressive, boring, and kind of nasty. At least that was my impression on the 6 or 7 weekends I spent there.

Vicky Ellis - it is hot in summer, cold in winter and very rural. The Lawton cops are very anti military. They will stop you for no reason, find some small fault with your car and write you a ticket for it. Like license plate light burned out or brake light cover cracked, brake light burned out etc. They make lots of money off writing soldiers speeding or miscellaneous auto tickets. On post housing is very good but not enough of it. Many off post houses are run down with inadequate insulation for hot summers and cold winters. I learned that the hard way. If you like city life OKLAHOMA City is an hour away. If you have any specific concerns reply on this link and I will get back to you. I was in an MLRS unit there and we deployed a lot but it was always good deployment duty. That can be hard on families though.

I've been told by peers of mine that Ft. Irwin was one of the Army's best kept secrets. And I've had quite a few outdoor enthusiasts that loved Ft. Wainright and Camp Casey. I've never heard a single good thing about Ft. Polk. I think it's pretty well known that Ft. Polk is the armpit of the Army.

My worst duty station (I've been to Ft. Campbell, Vilseck Germany, Ft. Hood, Ft. Carson, Ft. Riley, Ft. Lee, Schofield Barracks and Ft. Useless...errrr Ft. Eustis. I can say that Ft. Eustis by far is the absolute Least favorite installation I've been stationed at. I'be been to a couple of reserve/NG outposts and that's what it feels like. More time and effort is put into how things look instead of how they operate. To compare it to high school sports, I feel like Ft. Eustis isn't the varsity...or even the JV squad. More like this is the Intramural League. Or the over 35 Beer Softball League.

I only had 2 duty stations. I loved Ft Wainwright. I was transferred to Ft. Bragg. It was OK but helped me make my mind up to reenter civilian life.

CW4 Guy Butler - I know a lot of soldiers. Ft. Polk is least favorite and Fort Riley is 2nd. I was at Riley for over 2 years. Hated it along with everybody else.

The biggest problem I had at Polk was needing a knife to cut a hole in the air in order to step outside. Only place I've been that consistently had 100% humidity and no rain. SPC Big Daddy Neeley

The only reason Eustis sucks is because it is primarily a TRADOC installation with all their silly rules. Off duty though, I loved it as there was so much to do, places to go and things to see.
