Okinawa was always a hoot. Good place for R&R from CONUS for a year or so. Worst was probably Camp Wilson, 29 Palms. Only spent a summer there for Gallant Eagle/Gallant Knight 1988, but that was plenty. Went back a few months later with MSSG-11 to support 3rd Marines CAX. Nearly as hot as Udari Range, Kuwait with MSSG-24. I can't even imagine being stationed at The Stumps but I guess you'd get used to it eventually. Never experienced needing a field jacket at night when it was still in 80's but 130 degree daytime temps will do that. So hot they had to put pallets at guard posts for MP's to stand on during the exercise. Their boot soles were melting to the asphalt. Other than that every USMC duty station was a virtual holiday, every meal a feast. Afloat was always the best, once you got embarked and settled in. I dodged a bullet by almost getting orders to first round of Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) out of El Toro, CA. Joked with the wife that one day I'd be knocking on our door in Housing telling her she had to get out, because the base was being closed. "But honey, we live here", and "sorry Ma'am just doing my job." Some other poor SOB got those orders. Good thing - lot's of divorce lawyers in CA.

Sgt Dan Catlin
Everybody hates on 29 Stumps, but I absolutely loved it from day 1. Spent a year there, and it was good duty 'till the end. 7 yrs, 2 OS deployments, and I loved it all. But the leadership after Nam was often just terrible. I separated the station from the leadership and made the most of it though. If I didn't do that, I'd say Hawaii was the worst, then everyone would call me crazy! Wouldn't trade any of it, especially Hawaii and 29 Palms!

Ft Jackson is, without a doubt, the worst place to be stationed. Great area to live, but that post is terrible. (Former Drill Sergeant)

I don't know. I was stationed at Fort Hood and as much as I want to say Hood is a giant shit stain that ruins young careers, I kind of have to admit it was a fun place to be stationed. So close to Austin and Dallas.
