I have SSG friend who has been on orders for a few months with the CAARNG as a temporary technician. He tells me he does not get BAH of any kind. He does not know if he gets points toward retirement. He gets GS-9 pay and that is it. Is this true? Is your only benefit the base pay?

A Tech is pretty much a civilian with a required Guard contract. No military benefits based on the Tech employment. Any military benefits would come from his status while on M-Day status.

There is a move to do away with these dual status techs.

He is a technician- I know California has some different rules to offset cost of living, but as a technician you are not entitled to any military benefit at all.

LTC (Join to see) dual status guys and gals have to maintain their military affiliation to have their tech job. You do yoir weekend once a months and two weeks a year for your mil gig. Again Cali has some weird rules in some areas where they get some bennies to offset cost of living. I am not familiar enough with them to say for sure.

Jim, he does get paid for his drill weekend by the ARNG. Nobody at his job knows the answer and I hope you do.

LTC (Join to see) - I was never ARNG or a reservist....so, I have no knowledge there, but I think you just hit the nail on the head and maybe the right path.... He is a GS-09. NO HE DOES NOT GET ANY BAH!! NO ONE in Civil Service gets BAH. That is a military benefit. Do reservist get it? Maybe for that weekend, but not for the whole month!?! In Civ Service he gets locality pay. Very high is Wash DC and NYC, much lower in Las Vegas...and lower elsewhere. He may complain about missing his mil benefits, but does he take a PT test in Civil Service! Probably not... (Police and 1811 investigators can be required but not many.) Tell him to go talk to his Civ Personnel Office. CPO will have a good laugh at it. Remind him, he is a GS-09, he does not get money for Quarters. Does Microsoft or Google give a housing allowance. Civilian world is a bit different but no housing allowances and no APFTs!

He gets gs-9 pay and he does wear uniform during the week. They don't call him mr. But staff sergeant instead. That's why I'm asking because it seems strange that he's wearing a uniform and only getting a gs-9 straight across pay.

LTC (Join to see) - Does he get locality pay? if that area rates it.... I only got GG-15 pay....I had to pay for my own house and chow. Most civ jobs are that way. The uniform issue is something that is put in the Guard jobs... His uniform was much cheaper than my suits. He should be thankful to wear a uniform and know what he is wearing the next day. (Sucks to match socks if you are color blind!!! And that is why I only owned black socks...and if you see me out in Las Vegas, I rarely wear socks with my sandals...amended uniform regs!) Remember this guy also gets all civil service benefits. Medical since he is not a retiree and would have to get the NG med....and families probably do not get to go....but the GS-09 does have med bennies and many people say that it is good.
