What can I expect moving to an unaccompanied tour? Is it like a deployment or are there things that are different?

Patrick, It depends where you go and what the mission is. My unaccompanied tour was to an Embassy in Egypt. I'm not a FAO. I had a furnished apartment across from a club house with a pool and a bar. Yes, terrible tour. Suit and tie almost every day.
I kept the family in Alaska and did a HAAP back to Alaska. It worked.
Ask your branch manager about the specifics of the tour. Or as a minimum find a POC to the unit.

I think that depends on where you are going unaccompanied. Going to Kuwait? Probably like a deployment. Going to Korea? More like being stateside without your family.
What specifically are you asking?

I'm doing a HAAP; the family will be either at Ft Leavenworth or at the follow on. I'll be at Red Cloud; not many of my friends who are here have been unaccompanied at this grade, so I'm not sure what's different and the same.

I'm down in Area IV, so CRC (Camp Red Cloud) isn't in my range of expertise, but I don't think it's much different. There are occasional restrictions on where you can go and when you can go, but everything else is very much like garrison. Weekends are typically off. Holidays are typically off. There is the occasion field duty. We have Hail and Farewells, unit balls and functions, regular morning formations, regular PRT, etc etc etc. No one is wearing IBA on a regular basis. No one is carrying their firearms daily. There are all of the regular amenities - PX, food court, clothing and sales, movie theater, pools, etc.

A couch, some bedding, a TV. You'll likely have to get an apartment off-post, so whatever you would bring if you were living alone somewhere. You'll be able to borrow the big appliances (fridge, washer, dryer, etc) from the Housing Office. You can also borrow a desk, and some furniture (but the couches and beds are so uncomfortable, I wouldn't). Bring your computer, Xbox and that sort of thing to keep you entertained. You'll probably be able to buy a junker car for around $1000. Cell phones with plans are relatively cheap here and readily available. Bring a few sets of civvies for the weekends. Anything you end up needing that you don't bring will be available somewhere. Amazon ships here pretty quick. Bring your ASUs, you'll have formal events.
Electronics are more expensive here, so keep that in mind when you think about what you want to bring. I know you are limited on weight. I suspect there will be a fair amount of things available here from people leaving too, so you should be able to furnish a place without too much trouble or expense.

If it is an unaccompanied tour to Diego Garcia, can you put me in your Sea Bag? 1 year of Drinking, Fishing, Diving, sometimes working, sometimes sleeping. I enjoyed the hell out of my 1 year Unaccompanied. Quality of Life was more than adequate and the side benefits were outstanding. Being After Hours N2 for the Entire Indian Ocean was pretty good bragging rights too.
