Things you can do or say at basic to ensure additional smoke sessions.
I thought this would be a good way to add some humor to the discussions list.

Things like...:

- Simply ask "Why?" for anything.
- "That was easy." after getting smoked
- Complain about the heat/cold
- Touch the campaign hat.

Not sure about Basic, but in Boot Camp all you had to do was say anything besides "This Recruit". Such as "I", "We", "Me", or say anything without "Sir" in it.

Not securing your foot locker, not have the correct angle on your sheets, not looking straight ahead at all times, smiling, not winning Drill, not winning rifle range, looking backwards on a hump. I could go on and on, but I think we get it.

My cousin (who was born a month before I shipped out) enlisted and went to FLW, where I was a drill probably six years earlier. Wrote him a letter with a return address of "Shauna Holmes, DS (ret)".
Let's just say I got some side eye when I saw him when I went back home a year after he completed AIT.

My longest smoke session came from day one out of reception, which was when they were attempting the shark attack, and 3 of us weren't trembling. The Drill Sergeant asked us each individually. One guy stated that he had done all of Marine Boot Camp 5 years prior to this, while the other responded with how his dad was a Sergeant Major who not only was a Drill Instructor but also the commandant of what later became known as ALC in the Army. My response was, "Drill Sergeant, you ain't got shit on my step-dad, Drill Sergeant"

Awesome! If my drill sergeants would have asked me something similar, my response would have been, "I've been pushed and punished in the martial arts since I was 4, Drill Sergeant. Not to mention both of my grandfathers are Montford Point Marines. They survived much worse, so I can take whatever comes my way. What's next, Drill Sergeant?"

1. Roll your eyes. Drill SGTs love that!
2. Ask the DS if he/she would like fries with that everytime he tells you do something.
3. Call the DS "Sir/Ma'am/Your Highness"

Last week of basic, my PLT's favorite DS was on CQ. We're formed up ready for weapon and head count before going into the barracks. He walks out, goes to the PG and asks for accountability. Bear in mind 1st PLT were the Spartans. PG calls us to attention and the rest of the PLT drops to a knee while yelling out "all hail king leonidas!!". DS freakin loved it. Sent us in and kept the rest of the Company for another 20 minutes.

"DAMN! You got ASS, DRILL SERGEANT!" Bad news, I didn't eat until dinner chow. Good news, I didn't lose my singing voice the entire time I was getting smoked as she had me singing love songs to her. GREAT NEWS, she gave me a "graduation gift" after AIT was done. I wish I would have known how wrong all of it was back then, though, because that could have killed our careers.

The funniest thing I saw was a Private received a about 20 Reese cups from his wife for his Birthday. The Drill Sergeants put him in the front lean and rest with his feet in a chair. Everytime he went down they stuffed a Reese cup in his mouth until they were gone.

First Aid Class
Instructor (1st Class Corpsman): Sucking chest wounds. Sucking chest wounds are characterized by bubbling bleeding....Yes, Recruit
Me: Ma'am, I was under the impression that all chest wounds suck!

That was an interesting day....

The best thing to do is keep a low profile, do what Your told and keep Your mouth shut. Basic isn't forever finish it and move on. I kind of enjoyed hearing some of the expressions the Drill instructor had anyway but knew enough not to look entertained by it. I had already learned at a Military Academy how to behave in formations etc. I could do all the push ups and running without a problem by why tempt things ?

Exactly what I told my 17 yr. old son when he joined the Army. It was surprising how smart I got all of a sudden. All of a sudden, he's asking for my advice!
