CSM Bennett, I'm hearing this statement a lot. It's sad if that's what "Old School" means.

Old School means I joined the military when one size fit all. I can stilat
l wear the Navy Boot Camp-issued boxer luposhorts, 12 ea. I had a 28-inch waist then. Those shorts fit perfectly now on my 42-inch frame, just as if they were issued yesterday, not close to five decades ago.

The line moves everytime a new or better way to do something is invented. What I hear when someone says "I'm Old School, therefore..." is, "I don't know how to do it that way, but I want to maintain a certain level of dignity so I won't admit I have a shortcoming..."

While I'm sure there are those around like that, I don't feel that represents a lot of Old School leaders. If this is the case where you are then that's just sad.

For the sake of clarity, there are "traditionalists" that would rather hand jam a counseling statement than type it on a computer. Those that will read a paper manual instead of an ETM. These NCOs are doing the job but not using the newest technology to do it.
The people I am referring to use the term "old school" to avoid work.

Back when the Z248 was pretty spiffy.
When F-4 Phantoms ruled the MAG-15 flightline at MCAS Iwakuni.
When you could shout "A-4s and Outlaws Forever!" at El Toro or Iwakuni and be accepted as a brother.
When you could be stationed at El Toro or Tustin.
When VMFA-122's callsign was "Crusaders."

Do you carry a notebook and pen in your pocket? Challenge stupidity when you witness it? Wear a wrist watch, carry a knife, wear your wedding band and don't hit on your friends wife? Do you remember Captain Kangaroo, and Get Smart? Can you lay a howitzer battery using the stars, and know what smoked iron sights are? If so you might be old school.

I still carry a notebook and pen. I have not worn a watch in years. I do carry a knife and wear my wedding band. I also remember Mr. Greenjeans, the CPT's best friend and Agent 86. I can lay a battery by taking the fire out of the old lady, but we traded our howitzer's before Gunny could teach me to lay by the stars. I remember when wiring a GDU was a new skill and shooting by voice was still standard operating procedure.
I decided old school is when the new howitzers the Army issued you are older than your Privates cutting powder on them! Now some of those youngsters are old school. They have become gunners and launcher chiefs themselves. Their privates are probably complaining that the launcher software is old because it is text based instead of windows based and relies on FM communications instead of wifi or Bluetooth! ;)
