I'm hearing/reading people saying "I'm old school, therefore..." So out of curiosity's sake, where is that ever-moving line?

BDU AND MRE? How about pickle suit and C rations. Deuce and a half' s were around until the the early 2000's. Try a M151 jeep. Now that's old school.

If you ever:
Had CRATs with Kool's, Lucky Strike or Marlboro left over from the Korean War
Knew how to make CRAT Ham and Eggs edible
Remember when our Vietnam POWs came home and rejoined the unit - a really good day!
Remember when the Huey's always seemed to have engine problems at the worst possible time
When Infantry had Proficiency Pay!
You might be old school. Though it is always a moving target as my son the Army Infantry Sergeant reminds me. There is always another generation of "Old School."

Old School Army

- no PT uniforms. We wore unbloused fatigue pants, issue combat boots, and a white t-shirt (basically we did PT in uniform)

- ate C rations

-drove in M151 Jeeps

- used M79 Grenade launchers

- wore cold weather gear that was originally issued during the Korean War

- Used "steel pot" helmets for everything from showering to protecting our heads

- stayed in WWII barracks, through out your entire career

- you have become best friends with "the pig."

- were issued Khaki uniforms

I think at this point amyome who had to starch and iron their BDUs and spit shine their boots can be considered "old school".

Which begs the question, what do we call the OLDER school?

New discussion, anyone?

Marine Corps changes....
Horse blanket to James Bond coat
Satine to poplin to woodland all the while keeping OD field jackets
Watching c-rats phase out and dark bag mre's that were hard to open
M49's bringing diesel for the heaters and mogas for the M151's and M880's
M50's bringing the drinking water with water bulls for backup
Splitshifting the 5-tons up hills to 900 series automatics and super-singles (both of which sucked)
Women on ship.
Women on the range
Chevron on the cover/Chevrons off (cover unserviceable because of pinholes)
OD covers still acceptable in formations with cammies
White t-shirt to OD and back again
Hummers replacing the 151's
Dragon wagons that were so touchy Marines getting pinned between them
M123 pulling tanks on Okinawa streets in the middle of the night between Foster and Hansen with road master(road bastards) escorts
Civilian clothes in olongapo drinking right next to Russians in civilian clothes and neither realizing
Walking the wings of the Bronco to fuel them with JP5 from the M870 hand nozzle
Hot-fueling CH53a and e's in the snow at Bridgeport
Catching the 870 on fire with starter Fluid and praying the P19 driver gave me time to extinguish it before hitting me with the turret!
Korean kids selling us glass bottled coke and moon pies at hill 190 while fueling the tracks with diesel
Standing all day on the Pendleton flight deck in '83 only to stand down
Breaking down new boots with shaving cream before building up to spitshine
Warm feet when the Korean boy sets your boot on fire with kangaroo polish and uses his bare fingers to work in the melted wax
Breaking the belt on a runaway 60 and swapping hot barrels
Phasing out the A1 triangular grip to the tootsie roll garbage
Full auto phases out to 3 round burst on the M16a2
Iron on EGA on crooked poplin blouse pocket
Piss cutters and Wooley pulley
Mixing napalm somewhere in the hills of camp Pendleton
These are only a small portion of my memories. Nobody can seperate me from them Semper Fidelis

I am Old School because I first wore green fatigues, carried an M16A1, wore a steel pot and parachuted from a C123 Provider.

Having gone to Great Mistakes Illinois for boot camp during the time there were red ropers, and you marched as a company for roughly 27 miles during boot camp. Having gone to Hospital Corps School in Great Mistakes as well. That heritage area is now completely destroyed and has been turned into Section 8 housing in a very disgraceful manner. Having been around long enough to have been issued Green Jungle boots or an M-16A2. There are older school examples of course as equipment changed over time. I respect those folks as well.
