Did all of the above with a couple of exceptions,M-1 rifle, and"when the balloon goes up,get ready"!( I was in Germany when the "wall" went up,we thought that the "balloon was going up" very shortly.

Old school was the short 20 round (or 19 - let the fight begin) M16 magazines.

How about eating K-Rations that were about 20-30 years old? Yes, they were still eatable. Better than nothing when hungry and out in the field, but not recommended for prolonged human consumption!

Didn’t have nylon PT shorts, ran in green t-shirt, green fatigue pants, black leather combat boots.
Drove and rode in a Duece and a half.
Saw a Gamma goat flip over while climbing a steep hill.
Rode in cattle cars at Ft Polk during Inf AIT.
Steel pot, wore, shaved, whores bath out of!
If it’s made by Mattel it’s Swell.
AIT in WW2 Barracks Ft. Polk.
Kill a Commie for Mommy and Blood blood blood makes the grass grow greener Drill Sergeant!
Carried my tent pole and half, spent many nights down range in a pup tent.
Pressed and broke starch daily, spit shined my Cochran daily!
C-Rats only, loved ham and eggs!
Those were the days 75-83………

LBJ was president. Serial numbers. Starch. Brasso. Viet Nam. Serving with Korea and WWII vets.
It means you suffered and therefore everyone who comes under your command must suffer equally although they're still weak in your eyes.

It could be measured in time and experience. I found it was when you stopped fighting the system and wondering why the hell they did some of the stupid stuff they did, I was 'old school.'

If you know what a p-38 is, and why you put it on your dog tag chain, and and held it close... then you know what old school was, is, and always will be!

Another Old Timer activity they don't know of today. Qualification Buffer. They will never know the pains of hours on end of cleaning the floors so that there is NO residue and the ALL Clear to start waxing. The can of wax with a wire hanger handle. Start it on fire, put it out, drip it on the floor then buff, and buff until you have that semi-gloss shine and bust out with that square piece of wool blanket for that immaculate shine!!! NOTHING was more satisfying as a hallway, 1SG, CO or room that you need shades for.
Now it can't be done because someone with something for authority made the light switch go on that this shit is completely dangerous. FIRE HAZARD!!! Invisible flames. LOL
OH. Hard lesson learned. Do NOT use pledge for that even glorious shine. Hit that floor with wet boots. You're throwing a track. HARD!!! HAHAHAAAA
