A great assignment. Although I traveled a lot, my wife and I made the most of our time there (visited the USSR and East Berlin before the wall fell, etc.). We also completed some college work there. Note, however, I was there in the mid- '80's during the cold war right after the USAFE HQ building was blown up by the Red Brigade so my experience was "old school".

I was just down the block at Zweibrucken AB. Loved my 3 years there in the late 80s. My wife and family hated to leave.

LOVED my time there...unfortunately, I was kept so busy that my wife and daughter saw more of the area then I did....but I DID enjoy it LOTS and LOTS when I had some time off. Lots to do within a couple hours drive!! Basket Factory, Tongren Belgium (flea market every Sunday except Easter), and so much more....

Now that was a gorgeous base. The 4th of July festivals were always a great time.

I was there when it was F-16 country and loved it. I was young and spent too much time at Fred's Lounge instead of seeing more of the country. Great assignment though.

Msgt (Ret) was there in 1989 to 1991, was one of the absolute best assignments I had wife worked on Army base. Had lots of friends from both branches. Travel opportunities got to see wall come down and the Roger Waters (Pink Floyd) concert in the Berlin, Paris days drive and lots of old Europe culture. Of my 20 plus yrs it’s a 5 star besides going to Alaska 2nd best, you only get so many opportunities for an overseas tour besides hitting the sandbox before you realize your hitting retirement age. I loved my time there, 1998-2002. I started at Vogelweh, with the 569th USFPF and then the last two years was with the 621 AMSG/721 AMOG. My wife traveled with the USO on weekends because my last two years I was flying around Europe to check on Air Terminals at AF and Navy installations. My kids had a blast there, both on base and off base. I would go back in a heartbeat.
