What do people who have actually been under fire think of the "Only a good guy with a gun can stop a bad guy with a gun" argument?

I don't know anyone that thinks that.
I do know many that think a good guy with a gun can stop a bad guy with a gun.
Subtle difference, but different it is.
Every month we read of a good guy with a gun that stopped a bad guy with a gun...so that is fact, not opinion.
But good guys with hands, knees, and feet have stopped a bad guy with a gun as well.
Good guy with a cell phone have stopped a bad guy with a gun..
ect ect ect

good people need to be engaged, alert, oriented and ready to intervene on someones behalf. Even if it's not "their business".
A gun can help to embolden but a person that requires a gun for that may not act quickly enough.

PO2 Robert M. That is one of the most important parts of a gun fight. Everything you do may be questioned by people that their and only experience is what they see on TV. A smaller caliber gun make take a bunch of bullets to stop the threat and a jury may not understand. I see it all the time with police shootings.

SGT William Howell, PO2 Robert M. - The two most important qualities in a gun for self-defense is availability and reliability. The .22 gun on your person is better than the .357 at home. A .22 doesn't have the same stopping power, no argument there, and it requires a little more care in aiming, but it can still be an effective crime-stopper

SSgt Christopher Brose - Agreed. My carry of choice is my .32 Tomcat because it fits right into my pocket. You still have to be ready for the question of why did you shoot a person 7 times. Especially if they are a minority.

That is exactly why I have insurance for that sort of question. If I ever have to use lethal force to defend myself, I have immediate legal help.

That is a fair statement of the situation. The question comes down to, do you need to call a good guy (the police) or do you happen to have one on site at the time of the incident. If the sane members of the public were to take more responsibility for their own personal safety, then the mass shooting incidents would trend towards being a lot less massive. This is all predicated on the political class not passing laws that disarm the victims.
