What do you all think about Enlisted Soldiers getting extra pay for their degrees Bachelors and higher?

IMO, if you want more money for your degree, get a commission. Otherwise, get educated to better yourself and enjoy the degree when you ETS/retire. Just my thinking.

I don't like that idea (for enlisted or officers). Performance is what should be rewarded, not credentials. The degree is simply a credential that represents some underlying set of knowledge and/or competencies that may or may not be related to your job. If that credential enables you to perform better in your job, your performance will get you promoted, and the promotion will bring higher pay. Alternatively, if the credential qualifies you for a new job, and your performance in that new job is exemplary, then the performance will lead to promotions and pay raises. Simply providing extra pay for having a degree, any degree, ignores whether or not it is relevant to your role in the military (or any other organization, for that matter).

SGT Robert R. - All leaders? No. I can see where lower-level leaders don't need degrees, and I'm not sure that degrees add much to tactical leadership positions. However, at higher levels (especially operational and strategic leadership positions), I think that you should have a degree. Degrees are a signal of intellect, and intellect is needed as you go higher and higher up the ranks, and are therefore placed into critical positions where your decisions will impact greater numbers of people. Are degrees a perfect signal? No, not by any means. However, having a formal education, often at advanced levels, combined with a track record of outstanding performance, better places you in a position for success.

The fact that the service will pay for the degree is compensation enough. If you want better pay, go OCS.
