That said I usually correlate lifting weights to maxing out or at least going high weight. I specifically refer to it as toning if I am going lower with high reps.

I work in a supermarket. Lifting 4 gallons of milk in a crate is weight lifting. Especially when you do it umpteen times a day.

Having extensive rehab on both arms and hands, I was ecstatic when I reached the three pound weights. Using correct form gave me enough definition, relieved some back and neck pain and was enough for me. Three pounds.

What are you trying to gain? You can improve strength without bulking up. Cardio negates a lot of muscle hypertrophy.

I got t-boned car wreck few months ago. So, have to rebuild, hard getting every part to work together, and may need back surgery. Screwing up my golf game lemme tell ya. But, I do need to do more cardio, just for sanity.

Exercising in the water could be a great cardio choice since its less stressful on joints. Might I suggest glucosamine/chrondriton?

5' 9" 185lbs 18" rocks 28" waist and run a 50 sec lap on track in uniform with boots on. Ahhhhh I miss the days of being in shape. Could curl 120lbs and never rocked. I still weight in at 185lbs but gathered all my glory to my portable coffee table 34" (Belly) and enjoy 8oz curls of Foldgers now. My hands and feet stop me from trying to perform any kind of physical activities. I always tell my friends and buds to find their max and sell up this first reps then drop down 5-10lbs and start the burn. Do this until you can not pick up a bar without weights on it. You swell up then burn your shape in memory. All in fun and enjoyment.

All depends on what you're trying to do - bulk or get cut up. Bulk - increasingly heavier weight with lower reps 40%/8 - 60%/6 - 80%/4 of your max. You knock out the 4 at 80% time to max out again. Cut 20% to 40% max until muscle failure and lots of cardio. Something along the lines of that. If you're talking body building much more involving cardio,diet, carb cycling and etc. Many moons ago - 1,000 lb club.

Rising from a chair. Rising from the floor (a real challenge). Doing pushups (20 x 2 every day - Don't laugh. I'm 72 and take great pride that I can still do them).
