SFC Stephen King I laughed at those that told me I shouldn't lift while losing weight because "fat hardens" and is harder to burn. I laughed at those that told me I couldn't lose fat and build muscle at the same time. The only ones that I took seriously were the one that told me I couldn't make it, because they were my motivation to prove them wrong.
Left pic before Army, right pic is current condition. A few years in the making, well worthy.

It would depend on what each individual's goals are. I am personally a fan of functional weight lifting and workouts. At my age I find this type of lifting more conducive to my military duties, the APFT and keeping up with 2 very active kids.

My idea and others may be drastically different. I'm an amateur strength athlete. I'm a powerlifter, Strongman, Highland Games, and Olympic lifting competitor. I compete in all of these events as much as possible. I'm in the Master's category now at age 40 but that doesn't mean it's easy, just more experienced.

With my age and injuries, its Nautilus only baby... Nothing heavy, all repetitions... I'm just happy to be able to the gym and play with about 60-70 lbs (shoulders and neck) without re injury, and still look somewhat pretty good doing it! :) (at least I think so!)

Used to quite a bit. Age and a career as a 11B catching up with me. Already had 1 rotator cuff surgery getting ready for another(same shoulder) bad knees bad back etc. :(
to the point now where medium weight on the machines just to keep going is a good day.
Bio-freeze is my new friend lol

Lifting mass for the purpose of increasing strength... as opposed to doing so in the course of a job (moving boxes, etc.). It's not the weight that matters in my view, but the intent. Actually making an activity out of it. Why do you ask?

Great answer.
I also think Lifting weights gives you an edge over belly fat, stress, heart disease, and cancer. I am always asked why do you lift? I ask why don't you? I am approaching 47 yrs young and the lifting of weights is my single must effective way to be me.
