What do you do when a soldier refuses to listen to your directions?

This is a general question. If you have a soldier who refuses to listen to you, as a non-commissioned officer, do you simply put the incident on paper?
Example given- A soldier has unauthorized sunglasses on in a formation. You tell the soldier to take the sunglasses off. He/she refuses.
On the 4856, do you recommend for UCMJ? I've gone thru 600-20 and cannot find anything regarding this

More often in today’s army young soldiers feel it’s okay to disrespect NCO’s. The days of a private looking up to an E5 for guidance and leadership are slowly coming to an end. Unless higher really starts coming down hard on these kids, it’s never going to get better.

There shouldn't be much if any discussion. Have that soldier, TL, and SL stand fast after info has been given. Leadership failed the soldier, so pretty much, you get one, you get them all, EQUALLY.

The sunglasses are a violation of AR 670-1. By not removing them when instructed, he violated a lawful order.
Fry him with a nice heavy coating of UCMJ.... I agree the other commenter. FG article 15 with max amount of punishment. Destroying the glasses is not really a good moral boost to all. Keep it clean and try to be civil with misconduct.

You confiscate the sunglasses and tell the individual that those glasses will be placed with his civilian effects until he is done with basic training.

You can recommend UCMJ action at any point when the soldier violates an article of the UCMJ. As NCOs, it is customary to provide a verbal counseling on the 1st offense, a written counseling on record for the 2nd offense, and another written counseling on record with a recommendation for UCMJ action on the 3rd offense. My advice is to seek the approval for UCMJ action with your superior BEFORE putting it on paper. The worst thing for your credibility is to recommend UCMJ and have it shot down.

Back in my day--61/81 if one of my troops refused to take off said sunglasses I would remove em for him and they would fall on the ground under my boot.

That's kind of how I see it. In 1959, I was standing a fire watch through ear phones and one of the meanest Chief of the Boat walked up behind me, ripped them out of my ears and tore them apart. Then never said a word, message sent and received.

You remind them it's not within their rights to object. Then, you go back to your desk and write them up for violating UCMJ. When given an order, a solider has a choice to either follow it or be charged with insubordination.
