I currently work for a private security firm as a training manager and make ~$35K per year. I guess I had a greater expectation of what my management experience and business management degree would do for me as I transitioned into civilian life. Most of the offers I received prior to taking this position were mostly in sales. Not an avenue I wanted to pursue. Did I have unrealistic expectation of a salary of say 55-60k per year

I fell into the same situation after I retired in 2013. I was a technical track (aviation) so I would need 3-5 years to climb out of the mechanical lane into a supervisory or quality control job, regardless of leadership experience. I would rather sell plasma then take a sales job. The GS positions I looked at were really competetive and looked as if written for an specific individual. I work on aircraft now and make exactly the range you are talking about. Some guys said they did pretty well with headhunters that specialized in senior enlisted folks. I miss the Soldiers but 40 hour weeks sure are nice.
