Chris Ring, a U.S. Navy combat veteran, is attempting to become the first American to swim the entire length of the Mississippi River in honor of those who have died while serving their country.

Ring, 28, originally from Tennessee, is about halfway through his journey, and will be swimming through St. Louis on Monday afternoon, stopping near the Gateway Arch to get out of the water and meet with local families who have lost a loved one while serving the country.

Sponsoring the feat is Legacies Alive, a nonprofit organization that supports the loved ones of those fallen, whom they call "Gold Star Families."
