I keep seeing Soldiers with these bright running shoes and for some reason it bothers me although there is nothing in the regulation that states they can't wear these bright shoes I don't understand why they choose to get such bright shoes and don't get black, grey or white running shoes. Maybe it is just a problem within myself.

Honestly, please don't take offense, I think it's your personal preferences that are causing your problem with the shoes. I think there are a number of reason why these shoes are purcahsed and worn. To some it's an expression of their personality, think for instance the jocks in high school who always had to stand out. To others, its comfort level because most of these well designed light weight running shoes aren't introduced in bland colors. And to others it's there way of having something that they can control in their uniform. I also think these shoes are great, not that I wear them because I refuse to pay what they cost, but in most cases they are an added bright mechanism that enables Soliders to be seen when running in less than visible conditions and the majority of time they appear to be cleaner than your standard white running shoe. Yes, there are PT belts, but an added measure isn't always a bad thing. At the end though, it is just running shoes and in most cases they are only being worn a fraction fo the time as compared to the ACU.

I agree SFC Rosenlund. Not to mention most of these bright colored shoes are also reflective which means extra safety right? lol

Very true. Most of the big named running shoe brands do not sell bland running shoes anymore because they would not sell. I do not agree with the expression of personality issue though. We are not in the business of expressing that. Whats next we get to alter our ACUs or ASUs with bright and colorful items to express our personality. The Army has come along way since you were forced to buy black and white New Balance shoes at Basic haha.

My shoes look like a copy of Bumblebee from the transformers. The yellow is very bright but I didn't choose them for the color. It has taken me over 20 years to find a running shoe that fits my foot structure and running style so that I can complete a 4+ mile run without severe pain. These shoes were computer matched to my foot. This is the ONLY color that they come in so even though I am very conservative in my civilian clothing choices, I am stuck with 'neon' running shoes.

Army Times actually had an article this past week discussing the possibility of an 'issue running shoe' for the Army. This would be a disaster. Footwear is a very exact and personal choice and many of us (not all) wear the bright shoes for legitimate reasons.

I would also agree the color of the shoe doesn't make it a big deal it is the attention that is given to them. if they are the proper shoe for your foot and can reduce pain on the feet and knees. Color shouldn't matter.

I agree. When I go shopping for running shoes I go after the fit not the color.

I honestly have to say at first it bothered the hell out of me. The first pair I can remember seeing was after O.E.F 10-11 a Soldier had on a pair of bright orange shoes in my formation. Then as we went on a company run I noticed more and more of These colored running shows all over the place. Did some research and couldn't find anything about color for shoes. At the end of the day I realized as society changes even the Army changes daily. Hell if a Soldier buys them thinking he will pass his run then I say buy away. If the Army has no problem then good ole 1SG doesn't have a problem. Motivated Soldiers are contagious!!! I SAY HOOOOAH!!!!!

What do you think about neon pink, orange, green running shoes?

Here's my thought. Why do we care so much about the socks, (length, branding, color) but could care less about the shoes? It makes no sense what-so-ever. A soldier can wear hot pink, throw-up green, chemlight shoes, but he better not have on grey socks??? What's the premise? It is stuuuupid. It takes the whole purpose of uniformity away.

Pick one or another. Everyone better have the same PT belt but 4,000 different colors of shoes.

Lots of companies make white socks, where less make bland color shoes. It's not really feesable if you look at it. You would have to have an approved shoe list. That would prevent many quality shoes from being worn. The approved shoes may not fit all soldiers' feet.

Honestly I don't get what the problem is, it is really the only place a soldier has that he/she does not have a limitation on. They wear them at best two hours a day, you can critique their uniform everywhere else, what problem is this one item causing?

The point I'm making that obviously some missed is that if we can wear all those crazy shoes then what difference does the socks make. I should be able to wear whatever socks I want as well. It is pointless to make everyone wear the same socks but different shoes.

I think as long as if a Soldier is wearing their "soft shoes" due to a profile with ACUs then the shoes need to be subdued, but other than that colors are fine. I have numerous different pairs of shoes of all colors. The only other thing is there needs to be a more strict explanation of the difference between basketball shoes and running/training shoes. I have seen some shoes that are very close, and yes of course when purchasing shoes I know the difference, but there are Soldiers that will try to play the system.

No issues as long as the color of the shoes match the color of the PT belt... ;)

If we wear neon orange, yellow, or blue PT belts for "safety", then why is it a problem to wear shoes colors that are the same colors. My two cents. Funny comment though!!!

I actually get really bad shin splints. After a hard run, I can barely go up and down stairs for around 2 weeks while they heal. I ended up going to a doctor and had to go and get fitted for a certain type of shoe to help prevent them. The kicker? The shoe that was fit for me only came in one color, bright neon orange. They had one other shoe, which was a different weight but same effect, that was bright neon green. I've never liked to wear neon shoes, so I asked them why they only come in these color options. The response was that a lot of "professional" running shoe makers are only offering shoes in bright neon colors as a safety measurement, bright reflective colors to add visibility during early morning/late evening runs. Kinda reminded me of a PT belt statement. So you never know why they have them on. I don't like wearing them in PT uniform, but if they'll keep my shins from exploding, it's all good to me.

But SFC if you have your PT belt on your shins will be fine and no car on the road will be able to hit you.

Does it really matter if the shoes are bright and "fabulous". As long as they work for the soldier that should be the only concern for leaders. I would rather have a soldier spend money on good shoes over a contract marriage.

I still don't understand why we waste so much money on PT Belts when the PT uniform is reflective. Especially on posts where they shut sections of the roads down during PT hours. As far as shoes go, I prefer black shoes and as long as Joe is out there doing PT it shouldn't matter what they have on there feet as long they are servicable for them to wear.

I'm a minimalist runner, always have been. I prefer my merrel's and my five fingers...of course I can't wear my five fingers in uniform, but my merrel road runners are bright green...because that was all that was left in stock. Running in normal tennis shoes kills my feet, my shins, and my joints.

Also if my chain of command can catch me when running, then I'll consider changing the color ;)
