What do you think about Silencers and Suppressors?

Test firing of an AAC 762SD Suppressor on a 16 inch .300 Blackout Rifle.
The most popular and fastest growing area in the firearms industry is sound suppressors and silencers (The BATFE uses the term Silencers, I understand that you can not totally silence a firearm). What are your thoughts.

I would love to have one but I cannot justify the expense at this point.

SSG Roger Ayscue, I am enough of a machinist to make my own; it is dealing with the government that makes it more trouble that it is worth to me. I hate to call attention to myself with the BATF, and to maintain the paperwork and rules required. One slipup could have disastrous consequences.

I hate the term silencer, it's a suppressor, they use the term silencer to scare the civilians

I think that the part about silencers is the dumbest thing in the NFA '34.

I love mine, the wait was about 4 months. Paperwork done in one day. Now I did have to modify my AR changing out the buffer and buffer spring. And my 308 is far more fun to shot. And prices can be high depending on company.

I think it would be great to have one. It would definitely make things more manageable when trying to get your kids and wives on the range with you. (Not trying to stereotype. Just sharing my experience) BUT I cannot justify it due to the cost. It's a very expensive little piece of equipment plus the BATFE fee. Maybe the prices will come down as it becomes more popular.

Wait time is way down (about 6 weeks now) and a lot of fun. I am working on getting an NFA trust so I can get my Form 1s filed, one is going to be for a custom suppressor that I want to build, the other is going to be for a SBR that will have my sons birthday as the serial number. My friend has a great area where we have build (and continue to improve) a range, and we also shoot 3gun, and I like running USPSA and NRA Action Pistol...would be nice to do some training without the hearing protection.

Totally NOT A FAN of Silencer Shop. They are the ones that caused the "E-Forms" to crash and has caused the entire country to have to go back to paper forms. The BATFE pulled E Forms because of them, and now it is starting to come back after the web-based programs had to be rewritten in order to prevent hacks. NOPE not a fan of Silencer Shop.

To those looking to get a suppressor, the best thing you can do is get a specialized NFA Trust set up. This eliminates a lot of the hassle (fingerprints, county LEO sign off, etc) of owning one. I got mine set up within a few hours from a lawyer in Houston Tx that specializes in that department. $250 and about 4 hours later, I was ready to purchase my first suppressor! Also it makes it easy if you want your spouse to be able to have the NFA item while you're deployed or out of town. Simple process and well worth the money! Personally, I'm going to buy a .308 and .45ACP suppressor and just switch out the piston that connects to the gun so I can use it with all the sun calibers to save money.

I would go with the Silencerco or the NEW Dead Air Sandman L. AAC was bought out by Freedom Group/Remington and are being moved to Huntsville AL. It will take some time to get ramped up for new production. If you can find a dealer with AAC products in stock then OK but a new order that will require a Form 3 (Dealer to Dealer transfer) before you can even get a serial number for your form 4 may take some more a while.
