One of the most powerful images in history, in my opinion, would be of little John-John saluting the caisson; wherein lay his father-the late President John Fitzgerald Kennedy.

Iwo Jima, IMHO, still takes the prize but there are so many other great ones out there that capture moments in our history so well.

The ones that rekindle the American spirit - the bombing of Pearl Harbor is one that stands out in my mind...

For me it wasn't so much an image as it was a document. In the 1990's I got a chance to go to the US Archives, at the time there WWII documents on display. One was there, and if you didn't look closely , and were not a student of history, you would of never known the significance of the what you were reading. It was the backside of a simple white envelope, it was scribbled on it with a confession of a Private Eddie Slovack, the last American executed for desertion. Among a great many document and images, was simple document of a confession of a soldier who terrified to go back into battle, and paid the ultimate price for it. It stuck with me that this document was not marked (non of them were) but you had to have a little insight to know who he was, the significance that his confession would lie with so many other famous documents in the main room of the National Archives so many years later.

very few people have heard about the meat grinder the Hurtgren forrest was. A lot of American soldiers just thrown in without gaining anything.

Too true, few talk about it as it was a place that Patton didn't shine. His armor couldn't roll through their so it had to be taken inch by inch the old fashioned way. In retrospect it should of been bypassed, surrounded and just hammered to hell and back.

Whatever side you're on, I think we can all agree that these are some of the most powerful, iconic images in US history.

For me, the most powerful images is what the US contributed to the world. Wrights Brothers, I Have a Dream, One Small Step for Mankind.
As far as images that have a personal place in my heart, anything that has to do with the 9/11 attacks and the memorial. I personally saw with my own two eyes the jet fly into the first tower. I was sitting in science class in my HS in Jersey City, but had a perfect view of the towers and NYC. I was daydream and saw what I though was a missile.
I lost two family friends in that incident. I didn't want to serve for life, but that was one of the reasons that led me to make the decision to serve for a term. The image that I saw, and what I continue to see has changed my life forever.
I went to go visit the 9/11 memorial museum and I burst into tears.

I know how you feel. I lived in the DC area when it happened in fact my dad was on his way to a meeting at the Pentagon when it happened. I had the chance to visit the 9/11 memorial this year when my ship went to Fleet Week this year in NYC. it truly is a vary powerful memorial.
