I joined a little over five years ago, ever since I graduated my IET I keep hearing from senior leaders that soldiers arriving to the unit are less prepared/ trained upon competion of IET. What aspects of Basic Training do you personally think are no longer being taught or are no longer being enforced to the same standard as say 10-20 years ago? Idealy how could the system be fixed?

Nothing is lacking in BCT/AIT. What is lacking is what they are supposed learn at home. To expect the DS to instill respect and show a young adult something they should have learned to home during the early years and fit that..and all of the BCT criteria into 8 weeks is not possible.

the 1st soldier in the history of the world said to the 2d soldier in the history of the world "you young guys have it easy"
I came up with that in the early 80's
I admit that I had it easy, most of us were medics, or truck drivers, one destined for an Army band. I have no idea what the new Basic is.
Except to remember Task Force Smith in the opening of the Korean War where they sent the clerks and the cooks into battle and were slaughtered, Which is Why We Have Basic Combat Training. So does the new give enough combat training to soldiers who are going to be non-combatants?

In 1974 I reported to AIT at Fort Rucker, AL. I was in Air Traffic Control school. It was like going to college all over again. We had no PT, no KP, no other assigned duties except to excel in class. Not sure how the rest of the Army did their training.
