When I went through Boot camp, this ribbon was not a thing. I do not know why they created it, but IMHO, i think it is silly. Honor graduates occur in ever school and none award for it. What do you think about this "participation" ribbon?

I think it is valuable to recognize a Sailor that goes above and beyond and distinguishes him/herself.
However, I am adamant in my continued opposition to ribbon proliferation.
There ought to be an embargo on all new "good idea" ribbons until we find ourselves in a new conflict.

I went through BCT in 2011 and had 3 ribbons, NDSM, GWOTSM, and ASR. I think some recognition is fine, but this thing is right there with the ASR. I think the way the USMC awards their EGA is the way we should handle participation; if you wear the uniform, you must've done the work.

I have to disagree. We absolutely award honor graduates at most schools within the military. When I graduated the Chaplains Basic Leadership Course our honor grad was awarded a trophy. When I was the Chaplain at an "A" school training command every class had an honor grad that was granted the opportunity for accelerated advancement. Other schools award a plaque or a trophy or some other incentive to give the students something to strive for. This isn't a participation ribbon as you put it, because to get it you have to go above and beyond what the other graduates do.

Do we give out too many ribbons these days? Probably. But if I see this ribbon on someone's chest it doesn't just tell me that they graduated boot camp, but that they excelled. And that says something about the person. Hopefully that attitude that drove them to excel at boot camp will continue to drive them throughout their career.

Apparently the NAVY has changed one hell of a lot. I was my Company's recruit Chief, and the Company Honorman. I got a Certificate. No advancement since I was already a Airman E3 fo0r Graduating from NJROTC. Signed up as a E3. Finished AO A school 2nd in Class neither I nor the 1st person in class were advanced to AO3, and every class I had for Air Launched Weapons, in Alameda before signing aboard the Enterprise I finished 1st in class and then when named as DCPO for GM Division they sent me to DC School in North Island, I aced that class as well. nothing from that class either and most of the people in the class were pissed cause an AO out did the Hull tech's and Damage Controlmen in the class. Same thing with A7 E Framp top of the class no award or certificate. Well I want the Ribbon from Boot camp even though its NOT retroactive back 30 years LOL. Hell the Air Force gets a Ribbon is they can wipe their butt with less than 40 squares of tissue LOL. Just kidding NOT

Just as silly as the Air Force ribbon for completing BMTS; perhaps worse.

Hell you could add on "good conduct" and "longevity" for that matter.

TSgt Tommy Amparano - Staying out of trouble in the Marine Corps long enough to earn the Good Conduct ribbon should be rewarded.

Sgt (Join to see) - Fair enough. Since it was an Air Force person that mentioned silly awards, the culture in Air Force is a bit different or at least it was. Asking at the minimum that people not behave in a undisciplined manner is not too much to ask without giving them a piece of flair for their dress blues.

TSgt Tommy Amparano every branch awards a good conduct medal to enlisted personnel...this tradition started way back in the 1800s with the navy.
For that matter every branch also awards a longevity award to enlisted personnel...the Army, Navy and Marines simply do it in the form of hash marks on the left sleeve rather than the ribbon the air force awards. Granted...the air force is the only branch that awards this to officers.
