Prior Air Force Master Sergeant (E-7) heading to Army BCT (Ft. Benning) as a Sergeant First Class (E-7) in 3 weeks. What does basic look like as an E-7?

I also remember, privates, and the spec4 mafia complained when I assigned them to burn them latrine mess, that the NCOs never did hard work. So I took all of the 1st SGTs , and platoon SGTs out , and we burned shit for a day. That proved to both everyone, that we aren't above being in the poop.

As a senior NCO, i never forgot the advice, my uncle, who retired in the early 70s, as a senior NCO, do as your told. No matter the rank I held, the NCOIC, was in charge, so I did as I was told, period.

Well break in service glad you had made E7 before I had a break but was an E5 at the time came back as a E4 but understood that I had to pay my dues as I had to learn even though my break was relatively short some things change

Posted this a few years ago when I went Air Force to Army to ultimately become a signal warrant officer. I'll be putting in CW2 (back dated) next month.

I was in Basic back in 1988, had a 44 yr vietnam vet had to go back through with us. They treated him very differently than the rest of us. But he was a great advisor for us young ones. (I was only 17 and kind of awestruck back then)

Hello there my name is drill sergeant Souther. Spent two years as a osut drill sergeant in 1-81 ar and currently a night operations drill sergeant for 30th AG. As a prior service we are going to pull you aside especially with your rank and brief you on your limitations. Doesn’t matter your rank you’ll have to do certain things and get use to the fact that a e6 might yell at you and being prior Air Force you’ll have to go through all the training unless you’re a jtac or PJ.

I was prior service Air Force and re-enlisted after being out of service for 10 days short of 4 years. I maintained my E-4 stripes. I didn't have to go back thru basic. I did have to retrain from 70350 (Photo-Lithographer) to 90230 (Pharmacy Tech). Since I had a family at that time I was allowed to live off base while going thru Tech School at Shepard AFB, Tx. I had to be in class on time and was relieved of duty at the end of class with no further duties. At graduation I was assigned to my permanent station at Fairchild AFB, Spokane Washington. Given travel pay for myself and family. This was back in 1971 I was 27 at the time. They added the 2 years inactive reserve time to my pay which gave me E-4 pay with 6 years. I don't know what it is today since I retired in 1986 after 20 years as an E-6 with 22 years pay instead of 20 years.

Ok, I was prior Air Force E5 (40 years old at the time) going to Army basic at Ft Sill. It sucked but at the same time it was fun. My Drill put me on the duty crew. I guess he figured me to be a worker and not screw it up. I had some candid moments with my Drills at times. Had a few WTF moments from training cadre wondering if I was crazy for giving up AF life or if I was CID. The biggest problem I foresee for you is dealing with the all the d@mn kids. I didn’t have to live in the bays with them. Thank god.
We got through the shark attack and bay assignments. One of my Drills gave me my phone back and took me to the NCO rooms. Told me when to be back on the drill pad in formation the next morning. Basically, if we weren’t training, I was able to go back to my room and do whatever. Just be back for all my time hacks. I got base liberty twice and ordered from Amazon pretty much whatever I would have been able to buy at the PX. Tissues, cough drops, Advil. I opened that box in front of my Drill and he took one look at me then told me to keep it in my room and don’t share. Guess he took pity on my old ass.

It was great. I earned everything just like a PVT. It's been almost 3 years and I'm about to pin CW2. Life is good!

I'm one of the few people who can answer that from personal experience. I don't like giving my exact dates of service but everything I will write here is the truth.
I joined the Army Reserve in the 1980s. I went to Infantry OSUT, which is basic and advanced training combined, for 13 weeks.
Fast forward 31 years. I am an 49 year old E7 in the National Guard in a military police unit. I noticed that I was in a 31E slot. (Bear in mind that the basic Military Police MOS is 31B.) Upon inquiry I found out that 31E was "Internment Resettlement Specialist" (i.e. prison guard).
I was unemployed at the time and having learned a few things in my career I asked, "Can I go to school for that?" It turned out there was a 7 week course at Fort Leonard Wood so I signed up.
I reported to the unit in the evening and a fairly young female E-6 was the duty NCO. She went to parade rest (such formalities are usually dispensed with in the National Guard) and explained that I was what the called an "insert" which is a prior service soldier inserted into the regular AIT (Advanced Individual Training) course.
It turns out my class was myself, 5 other inserts (two E-5s and three E-4s - the oldest of which was 30), and 60 privates fresh out of basic training - most of whom had graduated from high school that year.
Lucky for me - my only extra responsibility was to make sure the other inserts didn't get into trouble which was easy because they were squared away.
While us inserts didn't have do the BS things the other trainees had to do we still had to do PT at 0500 and went through the same training. I had a private room, and a rental car so once the training day was over I was on my own and, best of all, I had the weekends off.
The instructors respected me as a fellow NCO and the troops looked up to me for my age and experience.
Yes, it was strange but it was the closest thing I could do to go through basic again 31 years later.

In your buddy's case, he will be going though basic so he will be living in the barracks and be subject to the same restrictions as the other trainees but he will most probably be named the platoon guide (or whatever they call it today). I suggest he brush up on Army terminology and traditions.
Good Luck!

Not my buddy. It was me and most of what you described was accurate.
