What does every one think about President Obama's plan to "Write off" Student Loans?

Aint nothing in this life is free....someone will pay, most likely every member on RP to start with!

It took me 7 years to pay off my $14k something and the final payment was one lump some.

I look at this like the "everyone gets a trophy" saying. I think completing a college education is like getting a trophy, and not everyone should get one. If EVERYONE in our country had a college education, then it would only diminish that accomplishment. And who would work the blue collar jobs if we all had degrees? I feel everyone should have the opportunity to get a degree, but not everyone should get one with the same ease. Life is just going to be harder for some, than others. That is why I joined the Army in the first place....if I did not, I would be selling drugs or in prison right now.

Part of the problem is the 2005 bankruptcy reform removed student loans from chapter 7 bankruptcy. This may have also led to banks offering loans to higher risk students.

It's all about the "carrot" and the "stick"...I read the President's claim he and his wife were paying off student loans only five years before entering the White House. Perhaps that so...if it is, then I'd like to know how someone reputed to be worth so much upon entering office was carrying serious debt a year or two before campaigning for the highest office in the land...Don't we rank debt load heavily in security clearance applications?
If it's more like I imagine...and it's no big deal to carry a debt you can easily pay off at any time to be "one of the people"...then I suspect he is simply trying to ensure the Democratic base is feeling all giddy when Mrs. Clinton asks them to sign her "pledge" form.
If my taxes are paying for it, I'd a whole lot rather them give mine to some hard working person trying to raise three kids and pay off a mortgage instead ;)

Not much. Nice idea but spending money profligately is irresponsible while cutting back forces and sequestering..

I am sure there are reserve or national guard MP's in your department. I would talk with some of them as they have first hand knowledge of your local units and the leadership of those units. I wish you the best in your endeavors to advance your career in your chosen MOS.

This is just more of the socialist showing themselves. Somebody will have to pay or those colleges and universities will suffer financially. Anytime I hear about stuff being written off or debt forgiven I just think of votes being bought.

There seems to be a large group of our society that thinks repayment of a loan (any loan) is okay. What about they folks who would lose the money they loaned? Or they ones who have to pay it back for you?
