Currently I am trying to get myself and my Soldier to become the unit armors. I have nothing to start with except "go to the local Army PMO to start a background investigation." Does anyone know what information/forms I need for this? Also as a bonus can anyone tell me some tips for being an Armor I always wanted to be one but never got the chance so I want to do it right.

First, you'll need to go to the PMO and get the forms. The CO is going to have to sign off on it (I can't remember if this is before or after you are cleared by the PMO). After passing your background check and stuff, your unit needs to submit a 4187 for armorer school. Once you finish the course--which only lasts a week--you'll be qualified for the position. You'll have to get issued a PIN for the cage by the PMO and have an MFR done up assigning you to the position--which will be required for the unit records as well as the PMO and your S2. Perform an inventory, sign for the equipment and the keys, and get to work.

As far as tips go:
1) Don't ever let anyone, regardless of rank/position attempt to bully you out of following the rules. You're the one who will go down if something goes wrong, not them. I told CSMs, LTCs, etc to screw off and follow the regs. They don't like it, but there isn't much they can do to you.
2) Keep pristine records. Paperwork is your best friend. DA200s, hand receipts (especially), records of servicing, EVERYTHING.
3) Don't trust anyone. When you do your monthly inventories, they either show you the equipment or you tell them they have an hour to do so. If they say they issued it out, they better have a hand receipt, then you find that person and see the equipment.
4) Don't accept dirty shit. Stuff starts to rust and break, that's your ass.
5) Keep your cage clean, you never know when you'll have to sleep there
6) Invest in a radio.
7) Learn excel like your life depends on it.
8) Make friends with your fellow armorers. They always come in handy.
9) If you have a chance to get your hands on parts grab handfuls! Order handfuls! Get in touch with the -30 shop and ask them for what they can spare.
10) Get in good with supply. You'll want cleaning kits, bags, tools, parts, etc.

There's an entire litany of advice I could add, but that's a good start.

Is you unit authorized an Armorer? If so what is the plan to get that person in. Now for the next question Sgt Merritt, you have mastered every task at your level, and the next level above you related to your MOS? 2 people to run an Arms room seems to be a bit much. What does it do for your career progression?
