Fort Stewart was a hidden Gem. I was there for 6 years and loved every minute of it. It's been a little over 10 years since being there and I still can't get back there for the life of me. It's like they won't send me back since I was there for so long. The area is beautiful, if you can get a house out in Richmond Hill. It puts you just 20 minutes away from post and 15 minutes from savannah. Savannah is where we spent most of our off time and if you like to fish, you got the luxury of both fresh and salt water within minutes from Richmond, you just have to fend off a few gators though.

I agree, Richmond Hill would be most convenient, even though it is A ways away from the cantonment area on Stewart. Try to make sure you're well-rested before and after work before braving that 20 minute trek though, because the main route from RH to post is a state highway through training area with nothing but tall piney trees. It gets monotonous driving it. IF you choose to live closer, as in Hinesville, be prepared to have a LOT less services at your disposal than Killeen has. From Hinesville or on post housing, it takes roughly 45 minutes to get to a mall.

I'm not sure what housing costs out in RH, either, but Hinesville's availability is mostly trailer park projects for the cost of BAH.

Dont even bother staying in Hinesville. We left there in October and for three years all I heard was police, fire truck, and ambulance sirens at dinner and bed time. Richmond Hill is definitely worth it. Airborne!

Spc. Wolf,

It all depends on where you live in Hinesville. The out skirts is quieter like Airport Road. We practically live outside of Gate 7 and have access to most of the stores here locally. BAH once again does not cover you with any additional money to live in RH. If you are really a shopping type of person and need it now then move to RH. We do most of our shopping on line and get plenty of Bargains.

Stationed there from 02/1996 to 07/1997, and loved the area. Savannah is fantastic: history, beauty, etc. Enjoy your stay and thank you for your service.

You're right where you can drive to Savannah less than an hour, drive to Johnsonville for about 2 hours, drive to Orlando (Disneyworld, Universal, etc) in about 4 hours, drive to Atlanta also about 4 hours, and if you feel like visiting Ft Jackson for some reason it's 3 hours, Ft Bragg about 7 hours... Basically you're in a good spot other than Ft Benning or Ft Gordon (home of Signal Corps) ... Ft Stewart itself is just like in the middle of nowhere but you have a lot of options to go around to.

Whole military reservation is HUGE due to the ranges.. Lots of new post housing also, Hunter Army Airfield is in Savannah but it's connected to Ft Stewart. Really humid in the Summer, don't really snow but just get frosty in winter..
