What killer app hasn't been made for U.S. Army Soldiers that should have been made already?  What kind of functions would be in the app?  I create apps in my spare time, I'm not lacking for ideas but would like some input from the field.  Currently I'm working on a DA Forms filler app and an Army Quiz Game app with an Army wide scoreboard.

I would love an app that would let me access .mil email on a normal smartphone. A local security token can be downloaded to ensure that my email can be checked only on my own specific device and combine it with a PIN, therefore achieving the same intent of limiting access through a CAC. This would help make communication among leaders of some units much more effective.

I figure if I can have a banking app, they can make one secure enough for you to check your email ;)

> Some frontend for google-level intelligence for queries relating to ALARACTS, MILPERS, and maybe even doctrine. "What are the regulations for this today?"

> An app that gives the right operational graphics I can draw freely with over some available maps (whatever MotionX uses?) and exports them as powerpoints to my .mil enterprise account in a real fast way... until we can get rid of powerpoint.

The CAC idea from MAJ Weiss and CW2 Castlen is crazy good too if anyone can manage to get the CAC/IT folks to agree to it. Then imagine if Soldiers could push/pull information from their phone app to a database on training they have going on, things coming up, stuff they've been tasked with, with alerts for all of that; you could even make a walkie-takie app or interactive contact roster app that's unit-centric.

I agree. Why should I be required to get a mobile CAC reader for my phone and iPad, so that I can stay current on email. After all I'm not always sitting at my desk!!!

While to name a few, the Armystudyguide.com app, any APFT calculator and a body fat calculator are definitely some of the best to have. Although it isn't a officially endorsed app by the Army, it definitely a great reference for leaders to use.

I have an App currently in development.  What is some of your previous work so that I can take a look?

As a Combat Engineer having spent most of my career down in the line platoons I think we could use the following Apps:

1. Demolitions Converter/ Calculator.  There is a lot of math to figure up when you talk about making timber cutting charges, cutting steel bars, or making explosives for bridge and road demolitions.

2. A Sensitive Items tracker. Army should have like a bar code on all there items and you just scan it with your phone and it tells you the serial number, the history and age of the item, with the option to have access to the TM.   Call me lazy but taking a old green notebook to the field to write down your entire team/squad serial numbers just sucks

3. Foreign/threat mine apps.  There are thousands of rounds and munitions around the world.  Why not have an app that you can simply take a picture of a piece of ordnance and scan it in, and the app tell you what it is your looking at, type of explosive, country of origin, etc..

Those are just a few ideas.  If you make any and get some money out of it feel free to throw some my way :)

I think the "digital CAC" app would be great.  This would allow you to not only check you .mil mail, but access MyPay, HRC, IPerms, etc all on your phone/tablet, personal computer.

They already have cad readers for smart phones.  They are just expensive.

Get a micro usb to full usb converter and use a regular reader and chrome app on an android phone... Works just as well and a lot cheaper!
