My parents are British. At a young age, I was introduced to Boxing Day. From 1958 on we visited my mother’s sister’s family in Bethesda, Maryland for the Christmas to New Years. We drove from Philadelphia [and later Upper Darby] down US Route 1 and stopped at the halfway point of the Maryland House Restaurant for a meal.
Christmas was a magical time when we were young. The next day we [my family and my cousin’s family] got into our cars bearing some king of food gifts and drove to the home of another British family to celebrate Boxing Day. That consisted of high tea with cookies and small deserts.
I thought everybody did this until I was old enough to discuss it my neighborhood friends.

I'm off on boxing day and it seems like all it is is a bunch of salespeople bringing back all the gifts they did not like. I am off tomorrow paid by UPS it's a weird holiday for me being from the USA But after so many weeks delivery packages Heart of Christmas I don't mind it.

PO3 Bob McCord yes, we have a Teamsters Union. Our pension is about 88% funded. We get an annuity for each year we work. We have the 25th and 26th off. I have been with the company for 10 years and I get four weeks vacation. Next month will be 11 years with UPS. They work out ossoff but at least we get a few days off. We get three days off for bereavement and we get five floating holidays which I use for travel to and from drill.

Boxing day is the second day of the year (in the UK & Commonwealth) where you are permitted to knock someone out in a crowd of shoppers without penalty. The other is Black Friday.
