My mom gave it to me a tiny sip at a time to stop terrible coughing.

In ROTC (1960's), the detachment kept a plentiful supply of G.I. Gin (terpin hydrate, codeine, and 42% alcohol)behind the counter in the office area. It got a lot of cadets through the frequent winter colds in Ohio. No Doctors or visits to the campus clinic. Just ask the SGT behind the counter. It worked!

1LT Scott Doyle,

Sir, you are correct! It had codiene in it! The clever or crazy Joes would top it off with a six pack!

Anything alcoholic, often homemade on base and probably toxic

GI gin is nick name we gave Turpin Hydrate Elixir with codeine. Gave it to us at the dispensary for chronic cough. Guess that makes me an "Old Timer"

Alcohol + Codeine.

The modern "Sizzurp" (Promethazine w/Codeine syrup) would be a close parallel.
