I'm going to go out on a limb and say it is really freaking cold.
If your question implies something is changing, it is because the international base at McMurdo has become a Mecca of sorts for climate scientists. They had quite a building boom down there.

It's a different place now obviously since I was there '76-78 timeframe. No military there anymore except for ANG C-130 lifts in and out. McMurdo likely has a couple/few liaison types for the air services and Coast Guard work. Everything is contracted out.

21 July, now for a bit of news from Pole. First of all, at the beginning of July the DSCS satellite terminal in Christchurch FINALLY got fixed...and this returned the fastest satellite to service after more than 2 months. The impact--lots of delayed large software updates and science data...not to mention a few bits of entertainment such as the first Game of Thrones episode. And at the same time, the folks geared up for the South Pole Winter...

Now we are on to something. I have had many UFO encounters. When I was Stationed in South Korea in 1973/4 in an Infantry Unit the entire Platoon I was in stopped for a Rest, after speed marching all day and night, we all laid down with our equipment still on our backs, on @ the bottom of the Hill all looking up only to absorb 20 plus UFO's flying over our heads. This went on until we moved out. WE talked about it as we all observed them going in right angle and stuff. They were very high white orbs. Then just months later @ Fort Benning GA. Where Lt. Kelly was @ walking about on the post, while in a Unit that Trained OCS and green bara and I think west point 3rd Lt's, a ufo was spotted Flying over the Base. That same weekend some fisherman were Sucked up out of their boat in Louisiana not far from us, That later was one of the most famous OFO encounters in US history. Right up there with the Barney Franks( I think was his name) and his wife's abduction from their car on the high way. The Local news stated that the UFO over Fort Benning was a -Hold on for it- a Weather Balloon. My 3rd encounter was in Arkensaw. Where a UFO flew between our car and the woods about 40' in the air. This was a 25' round silver disk That was going 100 mph. After watching it pass us up it disappeared only to reappear about 3 seconds later up the high way .10 of a mile ahead of us. It disappeared again only to reappear about .25 mile up the highway when it reappeared it shot like a tracer at a 45% angle over the woods. We stopped at an all-night truck stop where we asked to use the phone and called the local police as the entire Restaurant stared at my brother on the phone talking loudly without reservation to them watching. Now we are Hillybillies from Ky- but those were some real hillbillies in that restaurant that night. Weeks later the Air Force ( blue book- report) called us and got a report. That was that. This was in the mid 70's. We had no photos so That was that. UfO base- why yes how do you know?
