Some guys from the 12th Marines put a sign over their guns:

"With the help of God and a few Marines, MacArthur has returned to the Philippines."

The Marine Corps has a je ne sais quoi , we're larger then life to the world, how that happened, why that happen, I'm sure if you ask different people one will get different answers, but it's there and thats all that matters.

Capt Walter Miller - The fact that you posted this on November 8th (Currently with over 2,200 views and 80 comments) speaks to one facet of "What Makes Marines Different." This is just a stretching exercise for tomorrow. Unlike our sister services, we proactively celebrate the Corps en masse. Tomorrow, we'll all call a buddy, or three. We'll meet at local slop-chutes. Many of us have already been to our local balls. We proactively go out of our way to celebrate our fraternity. And to this, Happy Birthday Marine! (and that's just ONE thing that makes us different)

I wish. For the last 4 years, since I retired in Sebring Fla. I have been unable to find a gathering of Marines to celebrate our birthday with. Surprising given the retired military demographics here.

One of the Best Movies of all time: Full Metal Jacket.
Full Metal Jacket is a 1987 war film directed and produced by Stanley Kubrick. The screenplay by Kubrick, Michael Herr, and Gustav Hasford was based on Hasford's novel The Short-Timers (1979). The film stars Matthew Modine, Adam Baldwin, Vincent D'Onofrio, R. Lee Ermey, Dorian Harewood, Arliss Howard, Kevyn Major Howard, and Ed O'Ross, and its storyline follows a platoon of U.S. Marines through their training and the experiences of two of the platoon's Marines in the Tet Offensive during the Vietnam War. The film's title refers to the full metal jacket bullet used by infantry riflemen. The film was released in the United States on June 26, 1987.

The film received critical acclaim and an Academy Award nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay for Kubrick, Herr, and Hasford.[4] In 2001, the American Film Institute placed Full Metal Jacket at No. 95 in their "AFI's 100 Years...100 Thrills" poll.[

GySgt John Olson - What didn't you like about it Gunny? The boot camp part was in the ball park for accuracy. Maybe the Viet Nam part was over the top.

A friend of mine gave me a Viet Nam compilation of DVDs. One of them was "This is Parris Island" from 1965. That was interesting to watch.

& the only "I" I ever used with a DI was in "SIR, AYE, AYE, SIR! "Joker got it right when he said, "SIR! The private...(whatever)...SIR." There's no I in (fire)TEAM (tho there is an AM & a ME...).

that film was so accurate for boot camp when I went thru in 73 except there was a lot more gut punches than in the film.

I knew a reserve Army major some years back. He was an armor officer. His secondary MOS was CBR or NBC or whatever the Army calls it. When he told me that, I said, "Have you ever heard of the VX shuffle?"

He said -- "You Marines are sick."
