A soldier in my section has had real world shoulder problems his whole military career. I guess the PA lessened his restrictions over time. He felt the need to change something in his profile which surprised me because he really never was a bad soldier. Someone caught wind of it and I guess our company commander is going to handle it. What punishment is he likely to receive?

What should they get, and what will they get are very different things.
No integrity should mean no rank. Welcome to E1.
What will they get? A slap on the wrist.

Ohh, cheating on a profile, altering records. Bye I’d suppose, a chargeable offense?

Too many variables to answer. Could be a courts-martial, maybe an Article 15. Discharge is possible too. Depends on history of the member (great troop, etc.). Also depends on branch of service and commander involved. This from a retired AF JAG with over 100 courts-martial and thousands of discharges and Article 15s.

I remember a time before the digital world when a Soldier carried his/her 201 file on their person when PCSing to a new duty station. Many Company Grade Article 15s never got to the new unit. A different time I guess and its good to have better record keeping now. I would think a Company Grade Article 15 would be appropriate consequence for this action.

I had a really good Soldier do this. Or maybe he wasn’t when he did I but he ended up being a huge asset to the team later in the short career that he destroyed. He wasn’t bitter when his time ran out, he knew what he did and what was coming. It was a loss for the team though.

In Germany in the 80s, a Soldier friend of mine mailed letters back to his family from Germany. In almost every case in the world, this is perfectly ok. But he stole the commander's envelopes that had "For Official use Only" on them from the Orderly Room and he got to mail them for free, saving a quarter or something on each letter. They caught him and he went to prison. So, play stupid games--win stupid prizes.

In my opinion, if this is out of character for this Soldier you need to have a sit down with this Soldier. Find out what is really going on. Once you have establish that then address the altering a document. I can not tell you what a punishment should be HOWEVER, you should know this Soldier and you need to prove a point but you also need to fit the punishment with the crime.
