I've always been told 5 star General of the Army, but something tells me it will be Bowe, the traitor, Bergdahl appointed by the president.

General of the Army (5 stars). According to http://www.history.army.mil, the only people to attain that rank are George C. Marshall, Douglas MacArthur, Dwight D. Eisenhower, and Omar Bradley. The site also says that, "The grade of General of the Armies of the United States is associated with two officers in our history, George Washington and John J. Pershing, although only General Pershing actually held it". http://www.history.army.mil/html/faq/5star.html

The Revolutionary War Soldier image on the left is a detail from the painting, Battle of Long Island, by Domenick D'Andrea , part of the National Guard Heritage Series The modern-day Soldier on the right is from the 5th Battalion, 20th Infantry, 2d Infantry Division. This photo was taken in Iraq during April 2007.

You know that's not a rank, Commander and chief is a civilian rank given to the president as the head of the Executive of the 3 forms of our government.

Bryan, You said it... "It is a civilian rank"... which means that it is still a rank... and the Commander In Chief is the highest ranking official in the military... Any General or CSM or SMA is still outranked by POTUS...

Dude, you should know better than that. Washington did not want to be referred to by that title. That's not what he, the rest of the Founding Fathers, and the thousands of men who fought and died wanted, either.

There are few leaders in this or any country who lead us, but chose to walk away at the heights of his power. If that is not excellent what is? Only person that comes to mind is Cincinnatis of Rome, who Washington admired in history.

Technically, yes. General of the Armies of the United States is equivalent to a 6-star rank, although it was never implemented.

Pershing is the only living one to ever hold it. General of the Armies, 6 stars, not to be confused with the 5 star rank of General of the Army.

As well as Washington, however you are right in that Pershing was the only living person to hold that rank.
