Awesome book. 50th anniversary of the battle was several days ago. They are having a function with some of the veteran soldiers here at lovely Fort Benning, GA.

Lone Survivor. I read it before the movie was made, which wasn't nearly as good as the book.

I read everything I could find about the Civil War until my wife began bringing me diaries that she found. One written by a Confederate chaplain and another written by a Confederate officer who served on the staff in Richmond after being wounded in battle. Thereafter, I was hooked on reading the words of those who lived the war. Most recently I finished reading The Somme: The Darkest Hour on the Western Front by Peter Hart. This book is filled with quotes from letters and diaries of those who fought the battle, glued together with just enough narrative to provide context. I wish more authors would use this technique. I tried in my book about Castro's revolution in Cuba, but sadly most of the participants were illiterate and the few writings left by the principle actors such as Castro and Che were little more than blatant propaganda. Still, I used their own words from speeches to provide dialog and common sense and infantry training to speculate on the battles from the little evidence available.

Sir, it's nice to see an author on RallyPoint. I visited your web site. Thanks for the stories you tell.

I have raised children on the West (Left) Coast and now have three grandchildren here all of whom have been deprived of the easy access I had to the resources growing up in Baltimore. Easy access to the Library of Congress and the National Archives as well as the Smithsonian. Direct access to the Enoch Pratt Public Library. Proximity to many national parks including several of the major Civil War battlefields. Of course, Fort McHenry. Poor souls...
My book on Cuba is entitled Rebels on the Mountain. It is only available in ebook format. Historical fiction, it seems, is not a popular genre these days unless vampires are added (think Abe Lincoln Vampire Hunter - sad, really sad).
I too had extreme security clearances and had to shelf a project because it turned out that, although science fiction, it was skirting too close to reality

Pirate Coast: Thomas Jefferson and the Barbary Pirates War 1805
Was a great book to read. Told the story of Lt. Presley O'Bannon and the Marines movement to Tripoli to oust the Barbary Pirates. It is where we get "To the shores of Tripoli" in the Marine's Hymn. Of course, most of you knew that already. But this is a great read!!!

Here's one that is near the top of my all-time best books ever list: Unbroken
http://www.amazon.com/Unbroken-World-Survival-Resilience-Redemption/dp/ [login to see]
What a great book and what a fantastic story about guts, determination, resilience!
There's a movie coming out about this story (around Christmas 2014): http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1809398/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1

Though it's fiction, I always liked books written by W.E.B. Griffin, namely The Corps and the Brotherhood of War.

CSM Charles Hayden Passed 7/29/2025
PFC Zanie Young, 'The Brotherhood of War', 1982 version onward is my current read. My first reading was ? 30 years ago! I remember some of it, but am enjoying it all over.
Early on, in the 70s?, William E Butterworth, aka 'Griffin' was a co-writer of a short-lived paperback series titled 'MASH', Don't bother looking for a copy, it stinks!

@PFC Zanie Young, there are 9 books in that series. I just bough a used copy of Special Ops, the last book in the series today today.

I have read so many that it is too difficult to say which is the best, so, I'll just recommend a couple I have read recently. Great books (especially for the Military Police personnel out there). No -- I do not get any royalties for recommending them, although I know the authors/characters in the books... :-)
"Breaking Iraq" by COL Ted Spain
"Warrior Police" by LTC Gordon Cucullu and Chris Fontana
These are very good factual accounts of current day Military Police operations in Iraq, Afghanistan and other trouble spots.
