What is the best OER/NCOER/award bullet that you have seen?

My favorite NCOER was: Soldier could not lead a pack of ants to a picnic.

My favorite award bullet was: Soldier single-handed won the hearts and minds of the Afghan people.

With Soldiers like these maybe we need to go back to an Army of One!

Best one I ever saw: Soldier's will follow him only out of curiosity.

I am really thinking of using this one for a few evaluations. It may be true....

Sir if those are the best bullets you have seen on an award or an evaluation then I feel sorry for you!

I know you meant this to be a funny topic, but the sad truth is that across the Army people struggle with well written anything! To even give a leader the slightest idea that something like this would be ok is just compounding the problem. For the Soldiers (E4 and below) that are present here on rally point, this may prove to them that a lot of leaders just don't care about people! We really need to evaluate what we are posting here and think about the effects it may have on the group. We are part of "rally point, the professional military network" not "rally point the military facebook and comedy club."

Rant complete!

Saw this one yesterday in the senior rater comments:

o soldier has already achieved maximum promotion potential.

I think this is my new favorite way of gently saying do not promote.

I like that. More tactful than saying stay at current grade for remainder of their career.

The actual bullet I used on a NCO receiving a relief for cause NCOER was "There is no real world mission that warrants the retention of this Soldier"

He was kicked out three months later.

I wish there was an easier way to kick out some Soldiers in general. That is pretty fast and not the worst I have seen.

as for bad bullets, sometimes a "velvet hammer" is the bullet that really ends forward progress of those not deserving of promotion:

a senior rater bullet:

o with more time and maturity, this NCO could be a positive contributor to the unit and the mission

o has plenty of untapped potential

recommended next duty position:

o squad member

o repair and utilities assistant (for the one that's not good enough to be the R&U guy)

CSM I have seen "squad member" used before. Thankfully, not on any of my NCOERs.

SFC Settle, I'd like to put one of my Soldiers in contact with you about embassy duty (attache type duty), would you have an issue providing some direct mentorship?

CSM, there is definitely an art to evals, and a language all their own. The velvet glove can really sneak past people.

I know an O (not me, though mine do have a few "good" ones over my career - mine tended towards the iron fist.) who got a comment almost exactly the same as your first. Said O thought they they had a glowing eval.

I just wrote this senior rater bullet.

o NCO's potential is limited until she can build personal resiliency

yea the above bullet did not go over well with this NCO. But I had full support from my 1SG, the reviewer and other senior NCOs in the section.

Team Success due to subordinate performance.

Refuses to accept responsibility for actions, blames others for shortcomings.

I wrote those by the way.

In a bygone era; five "Success" blocks, no bullets. Once only "Excellence" and "Needs Improvement" required substantiating statements.

I had a SSG try to do that before we stopped and told him to input comments in order to develop that NCO. Cannot improve if you do not know what to improve upon.

a couple actual bullet candidates from an NCOER:

o personal heroism earned direct MNCI Commander recognition and visit during combat operations

o found first IED with Napalm in Al Anbar province, while leading a joint, dismounted patrol

o displayed personal courage, complete selfless service and competence while under a major complex attack which resulted in 39 casualties
