If you suspect that you might suffer from PTSD, answer the questions linked below, print out the results and share them with your health care professional.

To locate a specialist who treats PTSD, visit the ADAA Find a Therapist.

If the PTSD is due to war-related trauma or sexual trauma, go to your local Vet Center. http://www.vetcenter.va.gov. They are specialists in the treatment of PTSD. You do not need to be enrolled in the VA to use a Vet Center, you pay nothing, and the records are confidential.

I don't feel the VA are experts, plus if we do go to the VA we will lose our gun rights! If u can afford it, i recommend a private counselor

A1C Brian Bonner - The Vet Center is different. It was founded in 1979 by Vietnam Veterans who felt the VA was not understanding their issues since the VA counselors were civilians. Vet Centers are at least 60% veterans and at least 1 of them served in a combat zone. It is basically professional peer counselors. The counselors at the Vet Centers do understand and are more than able to help you with your needs. The one I go to are 90% veterans and all of them served in a combat zone. The Vet Centers also provide family marriage counseling AT NO COST!! There is no BS, you can walk in or call to make an appointment. All you need is a DD214. The Vet Center does NOT bill anyone and you are welcomed to come for however long you need to come. The most important part is NO ONE HAS ACCESS TO THE COUNSELOR'S NOTES! They believe in the total confidentiality (with exception of duty to report which differs from state to state). The VA and DOD do not have access to the Vet Center's records.

VA has some free apps to utilize to help yourself, PTSD Coach a would be the best place to start. I am developing an app for mindfulness which has been shown to help. The VA also has a mindfulness app but only for Android. Good luck
