It completely depends on the people you know and what branch you are going to. As a NG member it took me maybe a month to finish the process to go active duty. but all of my higher ups were family friends and so my paperwork was fast. a friend of mine is still trying to go active from the guard and it has been over a year.

It was a very interesting experience for me. I basically had to learn everything all over again. I switched from the marines so no basic training however I wish there was a transition process. I switched in 2008 when the army had a program called blue to green. 1 day I finished my USMC contract next day I was a sldr

I had real problems with the Army (National Guard) accepting my Navy NEC and "C" schools. Apparently the Army does not recognize the Navy's Hospital Corps School, Field Medical Service School, Independent Duty Corpsman School, and Aviation Medicine Specialist School. It took almost a year for my credentials to be verified and accepted.

From a rumour I was told, if you decide to join another branch you have to go through that branch's basic training again unless you went to Marine Corp basic training?

No, it actually depends on the service.
For example, if you transfer to the Army through the Inter-Service Transfer program then the following applies.
Service Members who have not completed one of the following will have to attend U.S. Army Basic Combat Training:
-Army BCT
-Marine Corps BCT
-Navy Special Operations Forces
-Air Force Special Operations Forces
-Air Force Security Police School
