Dumb colonels and generals. I’ve met arrogant ones, I’ve met pompous ones, I’ve never met a truly dumb one. I’m sure they’re some out there, but the movies and TV make it seem like the brainless general is always getting the wool pulled over his eyes by the plucky corporal.

I think it was in Tears of the Sun when Bruce Willis was using a Harris radio as a cell phone. Being a prior RTO, this ruined the movie for me all together. That and the use of helicopters in really shitty weather to access Skull Island in Kong. (That would absolutely never happen.)

And I forgot to mention that in King Kong (from a few years ago) the main character was able to board a C130, fly over San Francisco, get a nuke, drag it to a ship, sail to sea, and detonate it is roughly a two hour timeline. yeah right Hollywood.

I hated the King Kong movie because of how they portrayed the Vietnam era soldiers, every negative stereotype. Only the reporter and the former SAS guy were 'smart'... they even made the WWII pilot a buffoon. (Plus it didn't tie in with the original or the remake)

Anyone remember "Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea" or any movie that shows a Submarine doing that surfacing maneuver that shows the Boat surfacing like a whale. Can any COB correct me if I'm wrong but, wouldn't that maneuver damage the keel or maybe the entire Boat?

It’s not something you usually do for fun, but there is an maneuver called and “emergency blow” that does drive the bow of the sub out of the water at a pretty good angle, and it does bang the hell out of the ship, and everyone in it, when the bow comes back down. If you have ever seen “The Hunt For The Red October,” when the “Dallas” (I cannot remember what the real name of the boat was) came out of the water like that, it was actual footage of an emergency blow for testing purposes. I did two test blows in my career, and they were pretty strictly controlled to prevent damage to the boat. That being said, when the s**t hits the fan, and you need to be on the surface or die, you are not really concerned about damage to the boat. I do doubt that anyone would use that move to get away from a torpedo though, but I was never a boat Captain, so who knows!

In Saving Private Ryan, watching the squad medic charge a machine gun position. That just ain't done... And of course, all the older war movies where the German Army was rolling around in American trucks and armor...

That would be Giovanni Ribisi's character. I don't think anyone has pointed this out before.

My favorite goof is in NCIS. A geographically challenged individual would think Norfolk is a suburb of DC. They can leave the Navy Yard in DC, drive to Norfolk, conduct an investigation, all day, and drive back to DC and still be in time for lunch. If they drive, it is at least 4 hours in traffic. Also, why would sailors stationed on a ship in Norfolk live in the DC area?

So many from which to choose; probably the the almost complete lack of support gear (ammo, water, food, etc) most Hollywood "Grunts" exhibit when charging into battle.
