Hollywood will never get everything correct, even with advisors, so just sit back, enjoy the movie and chuckle to yourself at all the mistakes you notice.

I completely agree, though some try harder than others. But some movies are a drinking game of mistakes

While not a military movie per se, Independence Day. You know the scene. Where Will Smith, haphazardly dressing while responding to a recall, standing outside and his epaulets keep tucking and flapping as the shots change. Man is that distracting.

Minor details is one thing, as most won't catch it (like ribbon order, even soldiers have trouble getting that, haha) But more obvious stuff (the beret, time period correct, button the class-A jacket...) that is just messed up, I agree

I love watching "B" Movies because they really mess things up, putting enlisted stripes and officer rank on the same uniform. They are so out of wack, I can't help but laugh.

I guess any without regard to utilizing the soldiers that have actually served. If one is to make a Vietnam movie for instance, wouldn't you, as a director or producer, utilize some service members that have served in that conflict for guidance and supervision? I certainly would.

Platoon for example, not only had Captain Dale Dye as an advisor (he also played a small part), but the director, Oliver Stone was a vet. Both served in Vietnam. The movie 'Three Kings' had a Gulf War Vet as an advisor... as have many war movies.

Now, of course a lot failed to have a real advisor, others choose not to listen and prefer the 'Hollywood' approach because it brings in more revenue. Other times they have limited budget or the props and costume departments don't get it right.

There are numerous reasons but a lot of the silly mistakes could be prevented, and still keep it an entertaining movie/show.

Yup, "Lone Survivor," was almost entirely cast by veterans and active duty AF personnel with the exception of certain lead and supporting roles obviously. In that movie the PJ's were in fact real PJ's. Conveniently it was shot in Albuquerque and on Kirtland AFB where the PJ school house is. As a contractor I worked with a GS civilian, retired AF Major who played a Navy Commander SEAL in an ASOC.

One of the Transformers had some of it also shot on Kirtland. It had a real MQ-9 crews playing themselves as a Reaper operator. Many of the Airman in that movie were real AD personnel stationed at Kirtland.

Those are just to name a few.

Many films and shows are more focused on ratings and profit than on getting it right...

Haircuts, hair over the collar, 50 year old "chunky "actors busting out of their dress uniform but portrayed rank as a 2 striper. Females displayed in only clerical roles. My personal preference but women portrayed in more of a role like a Michelle Rodriguez movie. Actors need more time with actual members of the armed services....

SSG Pete Fleming - Vets have a proud history of going to Hollywood (back when Hollywood wanted to portray people in a positive light). We need more to do the same.

In the movie, Karate Kid II, an Air Force two striper is trying to help Mr Miyagi and Daniel with directions to his village in Okinawa, and asks the "Sarge" where it is. The sergeant then replies, "You are standing on it corporal." Well, there are no corporals in the Air Force, and his rank was actually an Airman First Class (E-3). The correct response from the sergeant should have been, "You're standing on it airman."

Saw a movie call “punch” that supposedly starred “real” rangers. I am not a ranger but I spent six months replacing tiles in a ranger school and PX , so I think theyre some cool professionals. I felt that the movie captured some of what the ranger attitude is like, but the training was totally off, more like special forces training.

The Package, an otherwise good film, completely ruined by the lack of input from a military advisor. But the biggest offender was Basic with John Travolta. I think the only thing they got right with that one was the layout of the guard shack.
