After serving the better part of five decades I am ready to prepare for retirement. April 2021 is my target. I have served in many organizations in different career fields. How do you feel the culture is now versus when you first joined?

Remember, if one fails the whole unit fails. That’s why there called units CW5 Jack Cardwell, a system of united soldiers to accomplish success, or die trying. Maybe more success and less dying lol...

SFC (Join to see) CW5 Jack Cardwell - yep- that. Feeling that right now- leader that looks like he is in his third trimester and has not done a fitness test correctly in years. Poor leader and they move him up and he moves people out.... his motto is why are you bringing me these problems- that is what I have you for.

Been here 40 yrs, seeing the 4th generation of the family that own the business, not to bad of a place to work, it's just some of the lackies that have issues.

And if it's a 4th generation family-owned business, the fact that you're calling them 'lackies' might be a contributing factor to the issues.

Well, I’m retired, living in west central Iowa on a hobby farm. Hmmm, let me think about that for a moment. “Mother, Marty wants to know if we work well together? What? Say that again. You really want me to tell him that? What? I’m on RallyPoint. Okay, I’ll forget it.” Marty, she says “Whatever.”

What is the culture in your unit or workplace?

Culture in my office...it's in the yogurt in the refrigerator. Sometimes we have cheese too!
Culture is not about the people in my office, it's more about our clients. And that has a lot of negativity, just due to the nature of my work. But we find ways to laugh about it.

I'm right ahead of you Marty. My MRD is October 2021. I'm going on an extended COADOS tour and it will take me right up to just short of my 60th birthday.

To answer your question, things are good in the Oregon Joint Domestic Operations command now, but I expect some changes to that with a new commander.

Don't think it has changed much in either the military or civilian careers I was in. What I wasn't prepared for was the huge difference between the cultures. We're all pretty familiar with military culture, but the laid back, unless it affects me I don't care, attitude in the scientific and education communities I entered threw me for a loop.

I’m worried that the culture of my unit is #mefirst

"Culture eats strategy for breakfast."
As the old saying goes: you can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it drink. Culture is the thing that gets the horse, the unit/force/etc. to want to drink.

I retired as a AGR with 21 years of service. No retirement ceremony, retirement award, or good bye. I do blame toxic leadership and at the same time I will reference a quote..
