Hi my name is Alana, I served in the Air Force up until early 2012. I was honorably discharged with an re code 3c. I was young and unsure of myself and my plans for the future, I enlisted because most of my family had before me and because I didn’t know what else to do. I had always questioned my gender and never felt comfortable in my own skin, I think in a way I had also hoped that the military would help distract myself from those thoughts and feelings, as I still was unaware of transgender people at that time. However my gender dysphoria did not cease in fact it worsened and I became more and more depressed. I started seeing a therapist but was too terrified to express the true nature of my depression, honestly I was afraid if I told her that they would put me in a psychiatric hospital or something. I was discharged with a “failure to adapt”. I am now almost 18 months transitioned after finally finding out about transgender people and I want to re-enlist I have my eyes set on the Army. I want to prove to myself and the rest of the country that transgender people are just as capable of serving our country. I know I can be a valuable asset. I need to know if there is even much of a chance for me. I am fully aware of Trump’s potential ban and this does not dissuade my decision, it fuels it. What is the likelihood of me re-enlisting?

To be honest, that kind of enlistment code could effect your packet. Best way to know for sure is speaking to a recruiter. That way you won't need online research or even random strangers to prove to you why this or that isn't feasible.

I've personally never met a prior service person who had that code at discharge but then got back into another branch later on. Love to know the results.

this is solid advice - the recruiter/s will have the latest and greatest concerning prior service attempting to come back to serving. Good Luck in your endeavors

No answer you get here will be as good as marching down to a recruiter.

What is the likelihood of my being able to re-enlist in the Army after receiving an RE code 2c from the Air Force?

I hope things work out for you. Like others have said, a recruiter is your best source of info. All I can do here is be happy someone wants to join MY great and wonderful US Army! Hooah!

Thank you everyone for taking time and commenting. I spoke with a recruiter and he said I just need to get a waiver and not to be discouraged, overall he sounded optimistic about my chances. Fingers crossed

Please post an update if you're comfortable with it. As a former member of a couple trans military organizations, best results and support comes from those real veterans and current service members who don't give a crap about gender identity but about getting things done and correctly. Here's to your waiver. Love to see another happy American with her head on straight to return to the fight.

I really hope you get the answers you want. I will always encourage anyone to join the military. I can tell you have a good head on your shoulder. Please post an update when you know. Have you thought of what MOS you would like?

Easier said then done, but no need to feel foolish. I've memorized a ton of codes for various things like MOS, ERB Reenlistment, etc. Many of them overlap and it's real late, but I'm on 24 hour duty so it's felt late to me since 2030 last night.

Based on what I found (please see a Recruiter for professional support on this) it states that a 2C reenlistment code is "ARMY, RE-2C Individuals who were fully qualified when last separated. However, reenlistment not authorized at time of separation under reenlistment control policy. Civilian: fully qualified for enlistment." [http://www.armyenlist.com/prior-service/prior-service-re-codes/]

While not an official Army website, it can help a little.

Talk to your recruiter, but, according to everything I've read on the AF, your chances are slim to none on rejoining the Airforce, you might be able to join the Army. Again, talk to a recruiter.

A1C Alana Greever recommend you edit your original post with the 2C code vice 3C so you don't have to keep clarifying it in subsequent responses. There are lots of experienced recruiting and retention people on here that could give a good answer.

I agree, you need to check with the recruiters, because things change all the time, but this is what I found with a basic Google Search:

INELIGIBLE TO REENLIST WAIVERS NOT AUTHORIZED AND WILL NOT BE CONSIDERED
NAVY & USCG RE-2, RE-3A, RE-3C, RE-4 (Note 1)
AIR FORCE RE-2A, 2B, 2C, 2D, 2E, 2F, 2G, 2H, 2I, 2J, 2K, 2L, 2M, 2N, 2P, 2Q, 2R, 2S, 2T, 2U, 2V,
2W, 2X, 3S, 3V, RE-4 (Note 1)
ARMY RE-3C, RE-4(Note 1), RE-4A, RE-4R
MARINE CORPS RE-2, RE-2B, RE-2C, RE-3A, RE-3S, RE-4(Note 1), RE-4B
*Only for personnel released for commissioning and subsequently fail to commission.

Alana, I hope you have received your answer. I don’t know what you had to go through. I am sure it was so awful not being able to be yourself. Just update and let the community know.

SSG Dianna Nazzal and Alana Greever, I had a re-4 from the Navy. I re-enlisted into the Army National Guard as an e-1 16 years ago and now am a SFC ,so it can be done with a lot of work
