For me, it is an easy one to recall:

I was a Private on my dinner break from a 24 hour CQ runner duty. I hadn't been in the military very long, maybe a couple months. I took my wife at the time to dinner at a restaurant, and because I was only on break, was still in my uniform. I excused myself to use the restroom, and while doing my business, the man at the urinal next to me looks over, smiles, and says "Thank you."

My response, I think was perfectly acceptable. I returned a stare with a single elevated eyebrow in utter awkward confusion. After a moment his face turned red, and he added, for your service, and quickly exited lavatory.

Mine was through my cousin.  He was pretty young at the time and he saw a Soldier in uniform at Walmart.  He goes up to said Soldier and tugs on his pant leg asking "are you in the Army?"  The Soldier replies "yes I am" and my cousin states "my cousin is in the Army".  The Soldier says "good for him" and my cousin says "he's a she!".  The red-faced Soldier tells him to thank me for my service.
