You cannot do Green to Gold as a USAR Soldier. That is only for active duty Soldiers. However, you can enroll in ROTC as a USAR Soldier and contract with them to become an officer. You would need at least two years of college left to complete the program. There are also specific scholarships for USAR Soldiers that guarantee commissioning as an officer in the Reserve. You can go to http://www.army.com/rotc to see what schools have ROTC if you are not sure. If you have less than 2 years of college, you might want to look at OCS. A career counselor should be able to help out. If you have any specific questions about ROTC, let me know as that is my job now.

I thought the same thing Sir, as far as green to gold being for AD but there was a soldier in my last unit, USAR, who was recommended by the commander to do green to gold. I checked and rechecked to make sure that I was hearing the right thing and it was confirmed by different SM's, those who would know thing like that, that it was true. I'm lost.

I looked into ROTC but after 2 years of being Cadre for their CST at Knox and seeing as I already have my MS, I'll pass on that. I know that OCS is another option too Sir. Thank you!

Green to Gold is an Active Program in the reserves the same program is called Simultaneous Membership Program, the main difference is pay. G2G you collect your enlisted pay while in college and get commissioned AD. Reserve SMP program you can go either Active or Reserve and you get the enhanced ROTC benefits.

SFC (Join to see) - You might be referring to a direct commission vs. green to gold. G2G is a specific ROTC program for active duty Soldiers.

I'll double check again with the SM but I am more than certain that they all said G2G. Maybe they were all mixed up in their thinking but it came from the commander as that.

I think you need to consider SMP. Or OCS. All is at Go Army.com.

I think that I am going to go OCS Sir. I just completed my Master's in 2014 and I really don't want to go through school again with kids. Not to put the program down but I have spent the past 2 years on AD at Ft. Knox to execute the summer cadet training for the students on break and the things that I have seen/heard/learned. I am the one not so old person who doesn't like being around a bunch of kids. I just don't feel up to going through the program for a 3rd degree. I don't know. I probably sound like a baby right now.

The USAR has a direction commission program. You need to talk with a career counselor.

The Direct (not direction, I know typo) Commission program is a great program (speaking from experience and not wanting to deal with OCS and the majority of youngsters). Talk to a Special Missions Retention NCO for more details. If you don't know who your Special Missions Retention NCO is...talk to your Retention NCO. It's a tough program to get approved in but it doesn't hurt to apply!

CPT (Join to see) - My mistake, didn't see you wanted to go from RC to AC. The Direct Commission program won't work for you. Sorry about that!

G2G is a program for active duty (not USAR) enlisted troops to complete ROTC and become officers and transition back onto active duty or serve in the Reserve Components, but it's not for RC troops. Contact a local recruiter and tell them you want to be considered for OCS. They will interview and board you locally, if they are considering candidates (not always the case). You must be aware that as the Army is decreasing in size, it is able to sustain the officer force just with Academy and ROTC grads, thus there is less demand/need for OCS and direct commission officers. Those programs are used to plus-up the officer ranks with quality candidates in times of need such as the surge in the mid-2000's when the Army needed more LTs to fill up newly-added BCTs. Good luck.

Thank you Sir. I was under the same impression as far as G2G being for AD soldiers but have been hearing other wise. So, based off of your comment and others it's pretty safe to think other wise. As I was telling another officer, I am unsure about ROTC. That would require me to have to go for a 3rd degree and I already have a family and work and things of that nature. It would be a lot for me to enter into such a demanding program. So, I am leaning more towards OCS. It's not something that has to be time now but it is in my future.

Roger all. It appears that OCS or direct commission are your best options. Check with a local recruiter or career counselor (see SFC Golden above). Good luck in your decision-making and thanks for serving.

I'd suggest talking to an AC recruiter about OCS. Hopefully, you meet the age requirement.

I actually am a Green to Gold Cadet. Green to Gold is not an Army Reserve program. If you are interested in completing your degree you need to talk to an ROTC program at the University you are currently attending or are looking into attending. If you already have a degree, you need to talk to your reserve unit about putting in an OCS packet.

If active duty is something you are considering, I would recommend the ROTC option because that will give you the opportunity of competing for active duty against the rest of the Cadets nationwide. Roughly 50% of Cadets get selected for active duty based on an order of merit list.

You can be in the SMP program (Simulataneous Membership Program) that allows you to be in your current reserve unit and the ROTC program at the same time. This will allow you to continue to attend drills and receive pay and you'll also get paid a Cadet stipend.

Let me know if you have any more questions. If you are qualified and are looking for an ROTC program to join, I'd be happy to help you out at my University.

Yes, I already have 2 degrees and really don't want to back to school. I was offered a place at one school in 2014 but I was 1 class away from completing my Master's so I declined it. So, I don't think that I will go the ROTC route. OCS is more of my option but I'd like to commission as an AD officer.

SFC (Join to see) - I understand. I've just heard it's almost impossible to go from RC to AC especially with the drawdown.

It most definitely has been. I have gone through 3 conditional releases so far to try and be picked up. I finally got picked up for AGR after almost 3 years of trying. So, it's just grid locked all over. I am thinking that I may have to wait a bit or catch things at the right time. I mean, I'm certainly not miserable where I am as an E5. I made that in less than 3 years coming in as a 4 so I think that I am doing some things right, or I hope at least. So, I am fine with waiting.

I just finished OCS for the Reserves last year. I went to a recruiter and filled out the packet in its entirety. From that point, it was accepted and I was brought to the OCS board. A couple months later, I was told that I was accepted and then went to MEPS to do my enlistment. At OCS, you go with people who are going to AD, Reserves, and NG

Ok. Thank you Sir. Good to know. So, seems like my first stop is a recruiter. Is there a recruiter specifically for officers?

No, from my understanding, the regular recruiters follow the same process, they just send the paperwork to a different department

If you already have multiple degrees, then I recommend skipping OCS and applying for a direct commission. It is a boarded process similar to promotions. You will get branched based on your degree or MOS branch.
Your retention NCO should be able to assist you.
That is how I commissioned.

I got my bachelors in human services with doesn't transfer to any MOS per say. They (the board and the Army) looked at my enlisted MOSes of 68W and 92G and branched me into Quartermaster based on my 92 series.
It is true that the Army will consider branch based on education, but only if it relates or are licensed in the field (nursing, counseling, ect).

Ah, I see. Well, would it still be the same thing with me being a Chaplain Assistant? I have no interest in becoming a Chaplain.

No, they would not make you a chaplain without going to seminary.
There is always the chance that you'd get branched based on the needs of the Army.
I feel direct commission is easier and quicker. If for some reason you are not selected you can still put in for OCS.

Gteen to Gold is a program for Active Duty enlisted to earn their degree and commission. What you would need to do is get accepted into a college with a Army Rotc program, get accepted into the school, then sign up for Rotc. You will still serve in your unit until you contract with rotc. At that time, you will convert to SMP. I would contact the college and seek the ROTC Recruiting and scholarship officer. Good luck!
