What is the right way for an officer to request to get out of the National Guard?

I was transferring to the Army Reserve so all I had to do is write a memorandum requesting to go to the irr and the Idaho Office of the adjutant General did it fairly quickly. You can also do this if you get promoted to Captain but the National Guard won't let you get promoted you can go in the irr get promoted then come back in. If I knew that, I could have been promoted to Captain two years earlier. Then I remembered looking at my promotion information because I put it for a promotion delay when I should just have requested going into the irr.

COL Vincent Stoneking - Missed the removal of the correspondence courses and my reading says that electronic distance learning is limited to TPU right now. It still allows you to drill for points, but that is not attractive with 12 years to do. You might as well drill with a unit and get paid.

It seems IRR may not be worthwhile for me, although I guess I could transfer into IRR and give it a few years to see if things change so I'd be able to make good years. I assume I could fairly easily resign from the IRR if it's not working out? My main concern with all of this is that, having just returned from an 11 month tour, is that I don't want to do that to my family again. With my first child at home, I'm also not so keen on even giving up 1 weekend each month, but if I could find some way to continue service with a more flexible time commitment I'd consider it.

CPT (Join to see) - I've heard of situations where you could do go on temporary active duty and bust out your 15 days and all your drills doing so special assignment. So ask about that or you if you could Knock Out 3 weeks or a month can get it done for the whole year and then you're off the hook for the rest of the year period I knew a naval reservist to live in Taiwan he was deployed with me to Afghanistan and the Navy would put him on orders to go to Guam and do his training there. Something they will consider and a case-by-case basis and the most they can say is no

CPT (Join to see) - You can get a 2-year mob deferment if you transfer to a Reserve unit from the IRR.

You would have to work that through the Chain of Command. As an Officer your options are not like mine. It also depends on how you achieved your commission I believe. Also do you have any "hidden" obligations such as an agreement to serve a certain number of years in exchange for your ROTC/College education? If so these may need to be recovered before you will be allowed to resign your commission.
