I am not a VA Move Coordinator but was a volunteer in this program at the VA hospital in Palo Alto CA a few years ago to study the effects of diet and exercise for healthy living. And may be able to answer some questions about how important diet is for an overall Fitness Program. But talking to your VA Care Provider is probably better if you are serious about changing your eating habits to maintain a healthy life style. You may have to have a complete physical exam before beginning this program at the VA.
Basically the Move Program suggests decreasing fat from your diet and increasing cardio exercises. Hope this helps to answers some of the questions from the recent discussion I started "Is Staying Fit Hard For You?" & the VA Move Program & Green Diet was mentioned.

Good Stuff.....try to check your weight a few times a week & if you gain a few lbs then try to cut back on any bad eating habits and/or increase your workouts. Managing your weight after losing 20lbs will take some effort and good luck..

A. MOVE! is VA's national weight management program developed for Veterans by the National Center for Health Promotion and Disease Prevention (NCP). MOVE! is an evidence-based self-management program that focuses on health and wellness through healthy eating, physical activity, and behavior change. I like the term MOVE. "Like MOVE your fat tush, Soldier!" Lol. It is a good program a friend of went thru the program in Denver, CO. And he lost 50 lbs so I guess it works if you commit to the guidelines. You get out what you put in.

I have been a member of the Move Program at the VA for over 5 years. I was not doing exercise and gained weight. I was at 248 ponds, with the move program, I was able to lose pounds in months. I learned to record my food, learned to know what was good and what was bad for me to me. No food is off limits, it is the amount. So nutrition and exercise plans are the tools to lose weight. The six month lost was aided by the Optic Fast diet. It is a liquid diet for 10 weeks and then you learn to eat proper portions. Benefits are lose of weight, healthy exercise plans. and once a month group meeting.

A friend of mine, was the Poster Vet for our local VA Move program. He was able to lose 60+pounds. He was and should be very proud of that. If you need a program to help educate you on creating better eating habits and exercise for veterans then check into your VA Move program.

I would suggest filing out the questionnaire if you are interested in determining your BMI (Body Mass Index) which is based on your height and current weight.
