This military culture can, at times, be dysfunctional. Service members are there for varying periods of time. It is incumbent to protect subordinates from $%*( trickling down the chain of command as well as to protect superiors from $%*( backing up the chain of command. This is a part of keeping the faith.

It seems to me that the Army misrepresents itself in many ways. I only met soldiers who were patriotic about serving their country after I got out. Soldiers get treated like crap for no reason at all. There is so much pointless agony you have to go through that isn’t relevant to mission readiness. 50% of people I met in the Army were assholes that I didn’t like. You better lock your gear up I had a so many things stolen from me. Thievery is a huge problem, way more than in civilian life. I could go on and on. So much for honor, duty, and brotherhood while you are in the Army these things don’t seem to exist and you all know this is true.

If you want smart to be part of the mix in military..make rank dependent on AFQT score.
Commissioned officers do not need as high of a score as Warrant officers and they do not need a very high score either.

When I see a man or woman in a military uniform, I always thank them for their service. I remember catching flak in 1968 when I came home.
Here is one opinion I read from a man who is a field grade officer in the Army Reserves. He had served on active duty, but switched to the reserves. He said the only recent war where Americans were fighting for their country was World war II. The other wars, we were and are fighting for someone else's country.

Before any one can enter any public service job they should have to serve their country in the military. All public service jobs should be earned through military service. Especially politicians.

So, you believe that all EMS, fire, and police officers should have to have military service? Garbage workers, postal workers? I don't quite believe that ALL public service positions should have to have served. I do agree that federal politicians should have experience, even if it just a four year NG contract completed.

SGT Joseph Gunderson - I don't know Joe if I could just draw the line at politicians. And just NG at that. Maybe active duty for federal politicians and NG or Reserve for other federal jobs. Then no mandatory service for state or city jobs, but a preference for military service.

SGT Patrick Reno - okay so you're saying that to be in federal service that one should first have served in the military. I mean, I can't necessarily say that I'm against such a thing. I believe that those servicing in the house and senate and certain cabinet members (SecDef, SecStat, SecHomeSec, etc) should have some form of military service but I don't think that staffers or other people should have to have served. When you start doing what really amounts to "conscription-lite" you start to undermine the value of some of the things that the military gives members. If we start making it mandatory for military service do we still authorize GI Bill type benefits? When does that become too much of a financial burden on the country? It just starts to get kind of dicey. Should the people sending our guys and gals to war have an idea of the gravity of their decisions, of course. Would I like a president with military background, sure. Do I think that not having military background should be a show stopper for positions like the POTUS, of course not.

SGT Joseph Gunderson - Joe I get your argument. It is just one of those things that sound good on paper but out in the real world it works like crap.
So your mentioned POTUS. so I looked up the numbers and out of 45 presidents 26 have had military service. Some have been great presidents and some have sucked ass, so I guese it really doesn't matter.

I have several very unpopular opinions regarding the defence establishment. Here's the one I think should be easiest to pursuade people of:
D&C and dress uniforms do nothing for no one. They're anachronisms from 200 years ago and are only a waste of time and money.

I don't like the way the USMC promotes. There were many leaders that I came across that didn't know their job but the could do 20 pull ups, run fast and shoot well. I agree that a Marine must be physically fit and be able to shoot but I think the Corps would benefit from implementing a test to get promoted like the Navy does.
