What does combat experience have to do with leading by example, being physically fit, following orders and a training schedule?

Hopefully our nation will return to a state of affairs where there's a shortage of combat experience. We've had a few times in the past where there was very limited combat experience in the service. You can't force something that isn't. If drill sergeants haven't deployed, or experienced combat, because of a lack of combat, I don't see that as a bad thing!

I agree. I think that a Drill Sergeant without combat experience can just as effectively prepare soldiers to be sent out to the force as any other Drill Sergeant.

My senior drill at Benning was on the trail during panama and desert storm, but he was still a badass. He had an EIB, and nobody thought any less of him compared to the other two DS's with CIB's.

When I was on the trail I wasn't combat experienced, yet I feel I did my job very well. What matters is how the DS does his/her job and stay professional at it.
