I am going to Fort Jackson for my next duty station as an infantryman. I was wondering if anyone had been those shoes and if so, what was their day-to-day job like? NOT GOING AS A DS.

"I'm going to Fort Jackson - what will I be doing?" is impossible to answer without additional detail.

If you have the UIC of where you're being assigned, you can perform a lookup in FMSWeb* and then research the unit as they should be listed as a tenant of Fort Jackson*

However, it's a good bet to say that you likely won't be assigned to a field unit, and if not going as a DS, then you'll likely be doing some type of training support assignment.

To tag on to what you have said, I was assigned to Ft Gordon in the late 80's for about 2 1/2 years. The first six months I was assigned special duty at the Ft Gordon Recreation Center on Clark's Hill Lake. For the remainder of my time I was assigned as a field evaluator for the radio side of MSE. As you said, he won't know until he gets there.

Also, basic used to be held at Fort Knox. Now there is an ROTC unit there.

Lotsa Infantry there, what I do not see is the Infantry Brigade that supports the post. Says the 193rd is there, but it is now a BCT Bde. Nor sure where the 197th and 198th are now. 199th is at Fort Benning being Training BDE. So I do not know what a 11x would be, perhaps an ash and trash, MOS immaterial job.

11X is a Non MOS Qualified Infantryman. Basically, once they're done with OSUT, they'll be assigned either 11B or 11C upon completion

I had a infantry SGT get orders for Fort Rucker. We were both a bit surprised. It turned out that he was going to be a operations SGT. All of these training units have random jobs in their staffs. Often, they are filled by 11Bs. I imagine that it will be something similar.

The only job I can think of is range cadre. I was a Drill there from '77 to'79.

Good afternoon SGT (Join to see). Excellent post. Thank you for sharing this brother John. I wish that I had an amswer for you. My first MOS was 11B and I was stationed at Fort Knox from 2010-2013 before the companies got dispersed everywhere. Most of the time our unit did textbook training, ranges every month, and the yearly 25 mile road march. Also, p.t. every morning.

I was in Ft. Jackson SC feb 22, 1972 thru may 72 after English School. There also has 11B AIT School. My unit was Bravo 7 -2 in New Barrack Building. After my Basic I was assigned to Chemical Corp at Fort McCLellan, Alabama later closed for contaminated.

The short answer is yes. There are many jobs in which you will qualify. Start gathering your paperwork. Start looking for openings at relaxing Jackson. Small arms repair, range control, and some other schoolhouse positions. There are many positions open to veterans regardless of your MOS. Remember too, your education plays a part as well. If you have completed a degree of ant type, that is also a leg up.
You may not not know it, but there is a VA Regional hospital and office in Columbia. There are many opportunities for civil service employment here, good luck.
