Generally as long as you are not getting a federal or state job then there shouldn't be an issue. Most civilians don't know what a DD214 is or understand how to read it so unless they ask why/how you were discharged I don't see it coming up. As for unemployment, if I did my homework correct, you don't qualify for it as it only pertains to honorably discharged service members.

There is a difference between the 2 discharge, yes you can still get the Veteran preference points, but that doesn't help if they don't hire you. I don't know where Eric lives, but they did a background check when they hired me for the Post Office. And then Jewelry TV did a background check when they hired me during the 3rd career. I had to have a long talk with my Department upon getting to the hire point, who was a retired 1SG- you won't pull the wool over those eyes with your phony crap- which will get fired they minute they find out you lied/falsified documents.

Most Federal/state government jobs require an honorable discharge, same for most other government jobs. Those companies that require background checks may also balk at hiring. If you are forced out (OTH, etc., ) you may not qualify for unemployment- just like not getting it if you are fired from a job.

As for what types of jobs can you get. I defy you to find a private company that even looks at it unless it's a defense contractor, has a clearance process (like a school district), or a federal/state entity.

What kinds of jobs can you get with an OTH discharge? Is getting unemployment a problem?

During the 47 years since I left the military I have never been asked about the character of my discharge, nor have I been asked to provide a copy of my DD-214 except to the VA. My years ago I applied to the Post Office for a job and claimed the Veteran Preference Points but they did not ask for any documentation, perhaps they looked into federal records without my assistance. If it were I, though, that received an OTH discharge I would petition the DoD for an upgrade to straight Honorable. If you are the person with the OTH, I hope you can prevail upon the powers that be that you do indeed deserve and Honorable. Maybe it would be a matter of time with a clean civilian record that would tip the scales in your direction. Again, if it were me, I would not sit still, I would do what I could to change things around. It would be a matter of pride for a job well done.

I should have looked at your profile before posting my response. Obviously, you are not speaking about yourself but perhaps about a client with who you are working.

SPC Mark Brown - Had you been interviewed and deemed acceptable to the Post Office, you would have at that point been required to show proof of 5 or 10 preference.

I was interviewed by the Post Office hiring office in Austin, Tx. Before the interview I asked the HR person what all I should bring with me as it was a 75 minute drive. He told me to bring my DD 214 and my VA letter of preference for 5 points. The interviewer never asked me for my DD 214 but did ask me about Military service and my preference points letter. I was not hired because I did not live in Austin. I had made contact and exchanged phone numbers with five other potential hires that day; of the six of us only two were hired. Those two already lived in Austin. They did not hire anyone who did not already live in Austin
