I've held the rank of SGT for over six years. My father told me when he was in the USAF it was not unheard of for officers to hold the rank of Captain for up to 8 years. I met a CSM who told me he was a SSG for 8 years. What say you? Any record holders out there?

I'm not sure it is a rank, but my Dad called me "Dumbass" for a very long time.

Sir, that is funny, and I can related to it very well, growing up with my hard ass retired Navy CPO father, I thought my name was, "I'm going to slap you up side of your head", and he did.

There is a guy in my unit that was a CPT for nearly 16 years. He got commissioned before I did and I got selected for LTC before he made MAJ.

My career was a long one. I began as a WAC, spent time in the USAR, the ARNG and in the ARMY. For some time I considered myself to be the 'rankingest' E-5 in the US Army as I held that for just over 18 years and never ran into anyone who held it as long.

back when I was a 2LT PL in the guard, I had a troop in my platoon, fuel handler, who had been an E4 for 39 years.

LTC (Join to see) - I believe it. Especially if that was his/her entire career.
In my 'early days' I knew several Regular Army soldiers who were referred to as duty soldiers because their responsibility was grounds maintenance and upkeep, who retired with 20+ years of Active Duty service. The days before 'up or out' and mandatory education.

I served in the Army: for three years and seven/eight months. I was a Specialist Four; for the majority of that time. SGT(P) (Join to see)

Was that the trend or were you picked up for LTC above the zone?

MAJ Byron Oyler it was an above the zone due to some medical issues that precluded me from taking a APFT. The following year when the only thing that changed in my file was an APFT I popped up to 15 out of over 300 candidates.

one of my former BN XOs was a Major for over 11 years for that same reason. He was AGR training/admin officer and didn't want to take promotion and have to move until his kids finished school.

LTC (Join to see) - After my 2nd year as a Chief, I opted to take a Personnel Exchange Program tour, in Ottawa, Canada. For 3 1/2 years I was a "one of one", meaning I was not rated against any peers. This pretty much guaranteed that once I returned to the Fleet, I would need 3 evaluations, showing proper progression, before I would be reasonably competitive for promotion.
