I've held the rank of SGT for over six years. My father told me when he was in the USAF it was not unheard of for officers to hold the rank of Captain for up to 8 years. I met a CSM who told me he was a SSG for 8 years. What say you? Any record holders out there?

That would be E-6, from 1993 to 1999. To add another catagory, I held E-4 and E-5 most often (Twice each).

SSG William Jones - yep. I've held 13 different ranks. USAF: A1C - TSgt and Army: SPC-SFC and 2LT - LTC.

SSG William Jones - I think the record has to go to a guy that was in my platoon when I was a 2LT in the guard. Dude had been a SPC for 39 years.

SSG William Jones - we had several guys who were career SPCs. Good old boys who just liked being in the guard and didn't want the responsibility of being an NCO. They were perfectly content to show up for drill every month, do their job and go home. But that was a long time ago. They don't allow you to stay in without getting promoted anymore.

Specialist for over five years. I went straight from E1 to E4 after five months and stayed there the rest of my career.

when I was a PL in the guard, there was a fuel handler who had been an E4 for 39 years. Guy was 59, joined when he was 18, made E4 in 2 years and then never got promoted again. He liked his job and didn't want the added responsibility of being an NCO. Happily retired at 60 with just under 40 years as SPC.

I guess things are different in the Guard, but I didn't think that was possible. Now I know. I think everyone should have that opportunity. A lack of interest or ability to lead or lead at a higher level shouldn't force someone to leave the job they have.
I was in a civilian career skills transition program with a guy who was retiring from AD as an E5 with 20 years. He was a great guy, and I could tell he was probably a great E5. There's no way he could ever have done a good job as an E6.

SFC, Dec 85 through Jun 97. I was the youngest Soldier selected by my SFC board (I made the secondary zone by 1 day) and the most senior SFC selected by my MSG board.

I've heard of Navy Chaplains holding LT (O-3) for 8 years, sometimes longer (12 years) for Reservists. My dad was an Army Dental CPT (O-3) for over a decade, though that was Active for 2 and change, and IRR for the rest.

Sew the stuff on, Imma gonna be here a spell. The truth be told, I was a LTC the longest. Promoted in DEC2010 and retired in OCT 2016....and I continue to be a LTC to this minute. for. ever.
The AD officers will move up or out fairly consistently due to DOPMA. I can't speak to RC officers as having a troop billet to be in is essential to their promotion process.
Many NCOs get hung up in Hotel California that is SSG. No direct evidence....just anecdotal.

SSG (Join to see) - true story. 1 October 2004. Summer of 2004 The Army announced they were short Majors to fill 600 billets. 1 October they simply just promoted the first 600 on the list. Problem solved. I got promoted 6 months early as a result.

LTC Jason Mackay That's like saying there was a LT shortage. Cuz, I mean, after all, Majors are just the 2LTs of the field grades.
(I was told that by a MG, who noted that hose are the only two gold officer ranks. BG would theoretically be the 2LT of the Flag Officers - but even they get silver).

I only held Sergeant for five years. That was the longest so far. I expect my CW2 to CW3 in the future will surpass that though.

Held SSG for 8 years. Retired MSG. I think everyone hits a point that seems endless at some point of service.
